Is SSL really neccessary?

  • I host on GoDaddy and had a rep call me and say that if I didn’t upgrade to add SSL on my account that upcoming versions of WordPress wouldn’t be supported or work properly. Is this really true?

    I’d like to rideout my contract for the remainder of the year before migrating to something else if that’s not NEEDED.

    SSL has nothing to do with wordpress, but the web is moving towards SSL. Later this year, browsers will start reporting “Not Secure” when you connect to a non-SSL site.

    Ask if GoDaddy supports free LetsEncrypt certificates.

    Bottom line: (1) These days, basic SSL should be free and (2) WordPress doesn’t care whether it’s run under SSL or not.

    Is HTTPS really necessary?

    No sane person uses SSL but all sane people use HTTPS. Small point, but let’s not call it SSL anymore.

    You should use HTTPS because it’s free, it’s easy to setup for most hosts and it will prevent bad ISPs from injecting their content (ads) onto what your visitors see when they go to your site.

    No that’s not true. Like Steve said, SSL has nothing to do with the support of a particular CMS. There are certainly advantages, but that is not one of them!
