Is structured data for Google Search?

Structured data is a way of communicating clearly to search engines as to the exact nature of all of your content. It does not “appear in search.”

It simply allows the search engines to understand more completely what is on a page, what it is about and then it is up to the search engine provider to decide what to do with the page.

But, why would a search engine want an image??? As I understood it, search engines don’t see images..

It doesn’t “want” the image.

It wants to know what the image is and what the nature of the image is and where to find it and whether or not it could be a part of an image search result.

Hmmm. The AMP fill-in-the-blanks areas in Structured Data don’t ask for explanations.

The video I watched from Lazy Ass Stoner showed the rich snippets he entered showing in Google Search.

Also, in one of John Mueller’s Google Hangouts they talked about structured data being required for a site to show up in the Carousel. I have no idea what the carousel is, but they clearly thought it was a desirable location for a site showing up in Google Search.

For my sites, image search has shown my images based on their names…

Also, if you go to the Preview of your AMP search result, it shows the pictures… Only I’m not sure if it’s showing my AMP structured data pictures, or the Rich Snippet images I entered. I think it must be the Rich Snippet as per Lazy Ass Stoner.
