is there a function to pause update of feeds in middle of update??

Hi, I update my syndicated sources every hour – often over 300 items at a time from 3 syndicated rss urls – however if someone looks at my site during this update, the page load is very slow due to the extra load from feed update.
Is there a function in Feedwordpress I can call to pause the feed update? I can then call this function when someone loads a page (and resume when page loaded).
I see under settings “Feeds and Updates” an item “— PAUSE or RESUME UPDATES —” but can I call that as a function and does it pause in the middle of an update, such as over 300 new items being syndicate?
