Is there a way to limit character counts in text areas

    This is best done with javascript. Do a search for “jquery textarea character limit” and you’ll sees several ways to do it.

    Would you add the jquery script to the template then?

    Well, that is not ideal, but it will work. The “right” way to do it is either in your theme functions or in a plugin so you can properly queue the script. But the template method is simpler.
