    Hi Team,

I love MailMunch but I’m in a position where I might have to stop using it if I want to use Varnish to improve my site’s performance.

My web host (Cloudways) has locked down Varnish config and essentially Varnish won’t work if cookies are used, and MailMunch sets a couple of cookies

e.g.In my case the cookies are:
    mailmunch_second_pageview
    mailmunch_shown

Is there a way I can run MailMunch without setting cookies? Is it a particular combination of settings?

    Thanks for your help
    Phoebe

    Hi Phoebe,

I am afraid this wont possible. MailMunch needs to set cookies to make sure that the same form is not shown to the same user over and over again.

On a side note, we are surprised to hear about a web host blocking the use of cookies considering this is a core feature of internet browsing with countless plugins and applications depending on the use of cookies.

Thanks for getting back to me Liz.

I was hoping that I could perhaps configure it just as an exit intent pop up which probably wouldn’t require cookies as it wouldn’t matter how many times you displayed it to someone, nor how many pages they’ve viewed previously.

I do understand that cookies are very common and offer up powerful functionality for applications, but unfortunately I’m at the mercy of Cloudways’ restrictions.

Phoebe, If you set the frequency to 0 days and use Show on exit MailMunch wont require the cookie but it will still try to create one since the form still have the functionality to remember if the user subscribed or not. You can give it a try and let us know how it went and then at that particular time we can see how the interaction is taking place and maybe we can come up with a workaround.

Phoebe- We run Varnish in front an extremely high traffic site (30M pageviews/month) and have no problem serving cookies. I think you are getting bad info from your host.

Hi @liz, thanks I’m giving this a go! Functionality wise it’s all good, but I’ve yet to find a way using htaccess that I can remove just the mailmunch cookies which will allow my varnish cache to continue to function.

@five40 thanks very much for sharing your experience. My problem is that my host won’t let me change my varnish config to allow the mailmunch cookies to be served yet still serve pages from the varnish cache. Apparently the config has to be the same for everyone on Cloudways. Shame it’s so limiting! It’s making me question whether I should go elsewhere.

@phoebe007 not sure how much volume you’re doing but I’d be happy to refer you to a new host to get a quote.

@five40 my volume is much smaller than yours but would still be very open to referrals. I am in Australia though and would prefer Australian hosts. Thank you!

I’m in the exact same boat as Phoebe. @five40, could you tell me which host is it that doesn’t block cookies?
