• is there a way to search only by whole words? Or perhaps only by tag or category?

I have been using the search feature to search my content, tags and categories. The results are erratic. Anyone else have this problem?

For example a word like “Maya” is quite unique and works well, a word like “vi” not so great as it is part of many words. “Peter” comes up with peter and peterson for example. In searching the word “code”, on top of good results, I get all sorts of posts with no discernible string of “code”. strange…

    Thanks for reading!!

  • In order to search on whole words only, you’d first have to define what a “whole word” was. Which would mean effectively using a dictionary to check the search keywords every time. After all, WP won’t know that “maya” is a whole word whilst “vi” isn’t (although “vi” is also the name of a *nix text editor – so is actually a whole word).

I’m not saying that it isn’t possible. Just that it’s not as simple as it might first appear to be.

I am trying a plugin called Search Everything:

    seems to improve search results.
