Is there a way to submit the form without a page reload?

    Also is there a way to avoid emails from being sent when a user tries to update his subscriptions (tries to subscribe for more taxonomies)?

    Yes there is: Let the user login to your site (any role will do) and the submit is done without any page refresh in both cases.
