Is there any way to speed this plugin up?

I was using a different plugin named Popular Posts by Webline, that unfortunately was not updated for over 2 years and it had a few incompatibilities with the new version of WordPress. That is why I switched to this one.

It would show posts almost instantly and that is why I kept using it for so long. Your plugin can basically do everything it did but for some reason it sometimes takes time to open and there is a blank white spot for a while. Maybe there is some useful code in the other plugin you could use to speed this one up.

I’m happy to help test stuff if you need extra helpers as well.

Is there also a way for me to manually adjust the numbers so I can add the data from the old plugin and not have to start all the counts again?

    Hi @a4jpcom,

I guess the reason you feel that the plugin takes some time to list posts is because WPP, out of the box, loads them via AJAX. Your previous plugin probably didn’t (or at least from its screenshots it doesn’t seem to provide such feature), hence the perceived loading speed difference.

WPP loads posts via AJAX by default mostly for compatibility with page caching plugins (WP Super Cache, W3 Total Cache, LiteSpeed Cache, WP Rocket, etc): this way your popular posts list will render dynamically instead of it being cached with the rest of the page by your caching plugin.

If you’re not using a caching plugin on your website then you can disable the ajax-loading feature via Settings > WordPress Popular Posts > Tools > Data > Ajaxify Widget and your popular posts will render normally with the rest of the page.

It’s also important to take into account other variables that can impact performance, like traffic numbers for example. There’s an entire wiki page dedicated to this topic so I recommend having a read when you have the time: WordPress Popular Posts – Performance.

Is there also a way for me to manually adjust the numbers so I can add the data from the old plugin and not have to start all the counts again?

As in an UI to manually type in the views count of each post or something? No, there isn’t.

I have, however, shared some suggestions with other users wanting to import their views data from other plugins into WPP so hopefully this might get you on the right track as the process should be fairly the same for “Popular Posts by Webline”:

Your advice made a huge difference. Thank you. I hope the plugin can be optimized more and still sped up though if you have any other great ideas. Thank you so much. I’ll keep testing the plugin as well to see if I can speed stuff up on my side as well.

As well as having Ajaxify widget: Disabled, I just turned off the cache and now the plugin is lightning fast. I don’t know why the cache was slowing down everything though.

You may have other stuff going on on your website but without more details (eg. a list of active plugins, current traffic numbers, etc) it’s hard to tell ??
