    I’ve tried looking into how to update it for NGG 2.0.x but can not wrap my head around what’s backing the parent plugin since the acquisition. Documentation for that is sparse or out-of-date at best, as well.

    As you’ve already noted, it hasn’t seen an update in a long time, and thus it’s still coded for NGG 1.9.x.
