We are having several issues with subscriptions in our BBPress forums:

    – I click “Subscribe” at the top of the post. When I refresh the page or post a reply, it “erases” my subscription. I had to try about 3 times until it finally “took”.

    – A moderator type of person subscribes to a topic/post. They get notifications, then miss a notification. Then it starts working again and they receive the next notification.

    – 2 people subscribe to a post. One gets notified immediately of the new reply. The 2nd person doesn’t get notified until the following day.

I see that this plugin has not been updated in over a year and may not be compatible with the most recent 3 versions of WordPress. I would love to see if this solves my issues.

This is a good news, bad news type of situation. The bad news is that I’m not currently developing or even testing this plugin anymore. I have moved on from bbPress because even with loads of plugins such as this one, it simply didn’t fulfill my expectations for a modern forum software. The good news is that your issues seem to be sharing a common feature: They don’t seem wholly deterministic, indicating that this plugin isn’t at fault and the problem can be fixed without having to modify the plugin’s code. I would suspect the issue lies with caching or WPCron. Try disabling caching plugins and see if the problem persists. If it does, try changing WPCron behavior, either alternative WPCron or real Cron. You can find instructions in this plugins FAQ (at the bottom of the description on the plugin page, after customization and snippets).

Markus, thank you for your speedy response. When talking with BBPress moderators on their forums, they said to exclude certain pages from the cache plugin we were using. I did this and it DID seem to make a difference in problem #1. I was able to easily subscribe afterwards. However, I’m not sure if it has solved the other two issues. I saw your code that should be added to wp-config, but I’m not sure I understand WPCron and what I am changing. Don’t want to chance breaking the website….I know messing with the config file can be “dangerous”. No white screen of death, please!!

I also found this other plugin: https://www.ads-software.com/plugins/bbpress-notify-nospam/

Do you think this would help at all or am I wasting my time on another plugin?

    Hi @mindylll,

I’m the author of bbpnns (wp.org notified me of this thread when you mentioned my plugin). bbpnns does have the option of running in the background as a cron job, and it will not use bccs.

As for the white screen of death, it’s always a good idea to work on a staging site before making any changes to production.

    Cheers,
    Vinny

Thanks, @usestrict. Not having tested your plugin I cannot vouch for it, but going by what you said, it does seem to address the same problem as abbps and might therefore be an alternative.

@mindylll, if there are no reasons (anti-features such as tracking, intrusive advertisement or such like) to avoid this other plugin, it might be worth a try. At least it seems to be actively developed – unlike my plugin. ??
