• This is a preinstallation question, obviously.
I’m trying to build a dynamite photolog. I looked at Gallery 1.4x… seems a little rough around the edges, but it is definitely designed around the photoblogger.
How is WordPress for photoblogging? Can you point to any example photoblogs?
Or would any sensible person run screaming from the idea of this.
I use Dreamweaver and have html under control and rudimentary CSS understanding and rudimentary PHP and MySQL familiarity, and rudimentary Linux knowledge (this will be on RH linux 7.3 server).
Do I ask my hosting provider to install WordPress, Movable Type, Gallery, or something else entirely. I don’t mind that you are biased toward WordPress… that’s great, but what’s your reasoning about it and photobloging?
PS. For people who haven’t tried WordPress, I think it would be great to have a link just for this subject…. I’m thinking about joining this community, using this software… and what are the arguments and strengths compared to the alternatives? A basic question that many people must have.
Thanks so much for your thoughts.

Hey, I found a half answer at the Wiki…
    https://wiki.www.ads-software.com/GeneralFaqs#x32.
SoI get the general picture…. WordPress is b2 on steroids, and without the bad MT attitude.
But does it ever date Gallery 1.4x?
Expansions, illuminations, ruminations and variations on the themes above still appreciated.

WordPress has its own photobloggin plug-ins like Pictorialis, which is very promising feature-wise. The only hesitation I have could be that I want a gallery styled application to store all my pictures and only display a selected few on a photoblog. And I’m not sure if there is a menalto gallery-like easy upload interface in Pictorialis.
The closest to an menalto gallery integration I’ve seen has been an “enclosed gallery” like The photoblog section in PhotoMatt, this is very easy to implement by adding a html_wrap/wrapper.header to your gallery installation, as discussed in this thread. I am using a similar setup, and inserting pictures in a post is as “simple” as copying the link html in gallery’s view picture page.
While I’m not sure about the features in menalto gallery 2.0, I am thinking about the possibility of developing / hacking something together that makes inserting pictures easier like this movable type plugin. I’d be interested to hear if there’re other users who would like to use such a plugin! ??

Or you may try out Coppermine. Its written in PHP too and there are some WP plugins to inegrate it into the blog. You will get it if you search the forums.

Pictoralis I/II… I spent some time there… can’t get clear picture what it adds to WordPress…
Installed Gallery 1.4 since above post…. don’t know why I even called it a photoblog… it is not blogging software. No search and it is basically a tree structure of albums that contains photos….
So WordPress is looking better and better… can’t figure out what added value Pictoralis II provides over WordPress.
Coppermine looks OK, but as a beginner I’m thinking it’s better to swim in the biggest most crowded pool… WordPress, or MT.
I don’t understand Perl very well, and I keep hearing about baaaad things that happened on MT….. so for now I think I’ll install WP and play with it… unless I can figure out what Pictoralis II adds to my life.
    thanks
