    Hello team,

For our customers, to be able to reach us easily via Whatsapp, I manually added this link to all our product-descriptions:

    https://api.whatsapp.com/send?phone=0123456789

Than I find the Yoast plugin detecting a link to an external website. (Giving me a green smile, while actually it’s not a real link for SEO-purposes)
So I started moving them from the ‘Product description’, to the ‘Short product description’. Than the Yoast plugin does not recognize/count the link anymore.

It makes me wonder, is there a reason why Yoast only looks at the ‘Product description’, and not also looks at (or counts) the ‘Short product description’?

A second thought I would like to share:
For SEO purposes, I think I should make the Whatsapp link ‘No-follow’ like this:

    Whatsapp with us!

Maybe in the future, the Yoast plugin can detect special (no-follow) links like the Whatsapp one that I have mentioned, and advice to make the link No-follow (if not already done), and maybe not count the link for an SEO-external link.

Looking forward to your thoughts. Thanks in advance ??

    Hi @victor307

Thanks for reaching out to us and for your question. First of all, we are sorry for the delay in responding.

Kindly note that the Yoast SEO plugin counts the link and text to which you are added within the default WordPress editor field.

As for the Products content type, the ‘Short description’ field is created by the WooCommerce plugin. So in this case, our plugin won’t be able to analyze the content added to the short description field (unless you have the Yoast WooCommerce SEO addon plugin). That’s the reason why you have noticed the green bullet changed to orange once after the link gets moved to the short description from description.

As the WhatsApp outbound link is not to pass any SEO value, you can add the target as ‘_blank’ with rel=”noopener nofollow ugc”. Once there’s a link with nofollow, our SEO analysis will recognize it and will show you an assessment asking to add some normal links for outbound with nofollow. You can read more in our article on how to improve the outbound link score.

Please don’t hesitate to contact us back if you have further concerns. We are happy to help.

Thanks for the reply @josevarghese . It’s good to know the analyze function is already available in the WooCommerce SEO addon plugin.

Once there’s a link with nofollow, our SEO analysis will recognize it and will show you an assessment asking to add some normal links for outbound with nofollow.

Just to be sure… Do you mean the plugin will ask to add some normal links ‘with’ or ‘without’ nofollow? I think the plugin will ask for an outbound link without nofollow right? (Or maybe I am missing something?) Thanks again Jose, very much appreciated.

The SEO analysis can detect if your links are nofollow. It will provide a feedback like Outbound links: There are both nofollowed and normal outbound links on this page. Good job!.

However, if you want to add nofollow tag to links, it can only be done using the default WordPress block editor. It will not work on the classic editor or a third-party editor.

I hope that answers your question.
