• After updating to 4.1 of WordPress, I’ve essentially been “locked out” of the administrative portion of my website.

It gives me a 500 internal server error with the following…

    Internal Server Error

The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request.

Please contact the server administrator, [email protected] and inform them of the time the error occurred, and anything you might have done that may have caused the error.

More information about this error may be available in the server error log.

Additionally, a 500 Internal Server Error error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

No idea what I should do here.

Update: I’ve checked all the permissions and they all seem to be set correctly, so again I’ve no idea what’s going on. This might potentially been set off after I updated my plugins too.

  • Usually this happens when there is an issue with the download, it is incomplete or damaged somehow. Try manually updating WordPress via FTP, delete wp-admin, wp-includes, and all the root files, like wp-activate.php. You want to remove everything aside from wp-config.php, and the contents of your wp-content folder.

Then download the latest version of WordPress, unpack it, and upload everything to your site. If the problem is with WordPress itself that should fix it, after you run the update for the database. If it’s still broken, try doing the same thing with your plugins, and your theme if it’s an off the shelf theme you haven’t edited at all.
