As the title suggests, I’m experiencing some issues filtering through media files on the media. I think I know the problem – there are way too many files – but I’m hoping to get some feedback on how to tackle this issue.

Recently, I’ve been tasked with helping clean up a website that was created about 8 years ago. Over that time, it’s been handled by a number of admins and contributors, some of whom have (for reasons that defy logic) upload huge files, and an enormous quantity of them; for example, some images are at 40mb, and to total medial file library has 20K+ files in it.

I realize that the quantity of files is what might be causing timeout errors when I’m searching for file types, but is there any way around this? One of the things I need to do is find video files, see what pages they are attached to, move those over to vimeo/YT, and relink them and then delete them from the media library. However, if the filtering process doesn’t work, what other options do I have?

    TIA for you recommendations!

    Hello @1ramyt,

Sorry to know you are having problem filtering the media file due to huge number of media files. I would like to suggest you try installing Smush Plugin that will help you compress your media files which will help you solve the timeout errors.

Then, you can filter the media files from the Smush. I hope this fix your issues, hope to hear from you soon.

    Hi 1ramyt,

I recommend you to install plugins which will help you delete duplicate, unused and large files. Although I have not used similar plugins, I recommend Media Deduper as it has good reviews. You can also search for other plugins from plugins directory. After completing that install a plugin which will compress your media files to fix and reduce your time out errors.

    Cheers

@aryalbodh and @jubinn – thank you both for your recommendations! I’ll give both of those a try. Looks like the only way to tackle this issue is to compress files and delete duplicates first. I just hope that deleting duplicates doesn’t cause errors (I’m sure there will be some occurrences). Hopefully this fixes timeout errors.

If not, I’m sure I’ll be back to dig around for more suggestions.

    Cheers!
