Issue Installing WP On Hosting Account

  • Hi there,

    I am having a major issue installing WP for a domain I purchased some time ago. I have multiple domains running WP and I have never run into this problem before.

    I use Host Gator, and have several domains running under the same account.

    When I install WP through Fantastico in my Cpanel for the domain I’m having issues with, I leave “install in directory” blank – as I do with all domains – so it will install WP in the root directory of the domain.

    I get this message, as normal:

    Install WordPress (2/3)

    The MySQL database and MySQL user ***** will be created and used for this installation.

    – You chose to install in the main directory of the domain domainimhavingissueswith.com.
    – The access URL will be: https://domainimhavingissueswith.com/.

    Click on Finish installation to continue.

    So far so good. Next, I get (I have intentionally added ****):

    Install WordPress (3/3)

    /home/****/public_html/wp-config.php configured
    /home/****/public_html/data.sql configured

    Please notice:

    We only offer auto-installation and auto-configuration of WordPress but do not offer any kind of support.

    You need a username and a password to enter the admin area. Your username is ****. Your password is **** The full URL to the admin area (Bookmark this!): [redacted]

    Still so far so good. Or so I thought…

    After installing, when I check “current installations” of WP on the fantastico page of my Cpanel, I notice all my other sites are installed as “whateverdomain.com/”, however the domain I’m having issues with keeps installing to “/” – not “domain.com/” – just “/”.

    The weird thing is I can log in to my WP dashboard for the domain, but of course the domain itself won’t load. I just get the Host Gator “getting started” page.

    I have never had this problem before. And I have no idea how to fix it.

    well if the URL above, the one you didn’t change, is correct I can view the default without an issue.

    however, I’d actually suggest you speak to the hosting company about this – it sounds like an issue with the installer – which they would need to know about, and may even have a fix – if one is needed.

    Really? So if you visit the URL I didn’t change you’re getting the default WP theme? When I view the URL it keeps taking me to the Host Gator “getting started” page…this is weirding me out…

    Yep I did see it – sometimes actually having the real url does help ??

    If the site/domain is new, it could be a DNS propogation issue – try tomorrow and see if it’s changed – or try visiting via a proxy.

    DNS caching. If you recently changed the IP address of the domain, then you may have it cached in your computer and it will still be pointing to the old server for you but not for everybody else.

    Windows? Open a command prompt and type:
    ipconfig /flushdns

    Also, if you’re using Firefox, this extension is handy, to turn off the DNS Caching there too:

    Hi Otto,

    Thanks for your help. I ran the command prompt under C:\windows> and got “the requested operation requires elevation”?

    I’m using IE8, running on Vista.

    Never mind. Problem solved. Had to run command prompt as administrator. Damn Vista.

    Also, having done this, it still hasn’t solved my problem. I’ll just wait until tomorrow and see what happens. If no luck, guess I’ll be visiting this site via proxy from here on in. Grr…
