• HI,
I coppied a .htaccess from another wordpress site anu uploaded it to my server. This made the whole site 404
I deleted the .htaccess and the main page is now working again but no other page can be found they all 404.

    The .Htaccess file contained
    AddHandler php55-script .php .php5
I am not sure what this does.

Have I broken the whole site?
    can this be repaired?

    Greg

  • You should be letting WordPress generate the .htaccess file by itself, and that way you’ll know that it’s correct for your site. Most times it’s OK to copy between sites, but sometimes it breaks, as you’ve seen here.

To generate it yourself is very easy. Just go to your ‘Settings -> Permalinks’ page in your admin area, set the permalinks to ‘Default and save, and then set them back to what you have originally and save again. That will generate the file, and your site should be all happy and working.

Thanks it it all working again now.

When setting back to normal the .htaccess was not created.
    I uploaded a blank one
Then setting the permalinks back to %postname% the system gave me a message saying “If your .htaccess file were writable, we could do this automatically, but it isn’t so these are the mod_rewrite rules you should have in your .htaccess file. Click in the field and press CTRL + a to select all.”

    Permission are set to 0644

Also the Yoast, WordPress SEO plugin is not seeing the .htaccess file and Robots.txt

    Could this be related?

It is most likely related as the Yoast SEO plugin does use the .htaccess file to “create” the robots.txt file.

As far as permissions, if you set it to 666 it will be writable by the system, and you can set it back to 644 when it’s done with the writing.
