Issue with back-end permissions

Follow-up: I figured out that there IS an item on the Category page, but it is simply not displayed and comes up fine in search

You can see the one item there, and it comes up in search. I guess that just makes this a bug?

Testing a similar restriction with a custom taxonomy (called “Hosts”) yields a different result, in which there are NO visible items, and nothing comes up in search. This taxonomy is based on Tags, which might explain the discrepancy.

Not sure if this will help or not for what you’re trying to achieve but the PowerPress plugin does have a User Capabilities function you can turn on by going to PowerPress >> Tools. (disclosure: I work with the Blubrry support team)

Yup, I’ve enabled that one! Unfortunately it doesn’t seem to give any permissions to allow people to edit the Podcast Settings

When you say “podcast settings,” do you mean the settings for things like show title, show author, iTunes categories, etc.? Or are you referring to posting episodes using the Podcast Episode box?

The former! The latter works perfectly fine. It seems to be just restricted to admins in general but I figured I’d try to let people do it themselves more if I had two separate apps to manage permissions

OK someone on my end DID figure out the podcast settings stuff (it’s PAGES permissions!) but the issue does still remain of the way Categories display when restricted

In order for users to be able to access PowerPress settings, they must have admin-level access.

Also, you may want to check out the View Options at the top of the page and make sure Categories is an option and that it is checked.

Yup! Here’s my settings, for clarity

though it says 2 categories selected when there’s only one, which is odd (in fact, it seems to be doubled up for everyone, and the Categories selection shows twice, which it was not doing yesterday)

The image example in my second post is how it shows up to the end user, where they can search and it shows up then

I am confused, the first image is for managing post types and taxonomies. The second is WordPress blog post categories (one type of taxonomy).

As for PowerPress, there is a capability for accessing PowerPress settings, you would add that capability to the role you want to have access. It does NOT factor in specific categories or which category is selected when editing a blog post. Meaning, if you give someone the ability to edit powerpress settings, they can edit all settings, for category podcasts and others. Keep in mind that “Categories” is a specific taxonomy for blog posts and that can be used with other taxonomies. Without a 3rd party plugin (I don’t know if one exists) you cannot limit who sees individual categories, or taxonomy entries for that matter.

As your first screen shows, you can select the entire taxonomy type “Categories” and either allow or not allow a user to access them, but even then if your user can create blog posts, they will not be able to select or change categories the system default category will be set by WordPress for new blog posts.

Another way to explain: “Categories” is a taxonomy, a category within the “Categories” taxonomy is a taxonomy value. Access to the taxonomy can be controlled, but access to each individual taxonomy value cannot. Again, there may be a 3rd party plugin that does allow you to have control at the category value/taxonomy value level, I don’t know of one though that does this.
