I have a problem with the menu in the theme: it appears as expanded in the header since updating to version 6.3 of WordPress. I’ve tried deactivating all the plugins, but that didn’t solve the issue.

I can’t make it behave properly in any way. I would appreciate any help and advice, as I’m out of ideas.

  • Hi @grzegorzjedrek. Hmmmm… that’s an odd one indeed, considering you have already tried deactivating all your plugins.

What happens if you set the menu to NEVER work like a mobile menu (the “off” option in the screenshot below)? Is it still open?

I can think of a few things to try:

    • Are you using the Gutenberg plugin? If so, what version?
    • Do you have any custom JavaScript on your site?
    • Have you tried creating a new menu from scratch?
    • Have you tried inserting a menu inside a different template part, or re-creating the Header template part again?
    • Maybe (this is a long shot) this has to do with the language your site is set to?

When I try to turn off the option you pointed out, this appears:

    1. I don’t use the Gutenberg plugin.
    2. I don’t apply any additional JavaScript.
    3. I tried to create a new menu. It didn’t help.
    4. I tried to place the menu in a different location of the template and create a new header. Each time it did not solve the problem.
    5. I switched the language from Polish to English – it didn’t help. Additionally: I removed all plugins, deleted and reinstalled the template. None of this helped.

Right now, I’m reinstalling the plugins.

Hey @grzegorzjedrek what you’re describing sounds similar to this issue which is reported in WordPress core (and will hopefully have a fix incoming).

    https://core.trac.www.ads-software.com/ticket/59111

At the moment the best fix is to make an edit directly to your database (following the instructions from this other thread).

    After some fiddling and debugging, I found that a database reset / reinstall would make it work. That’s not a fix, obviously, so I tried to get more specific. Dropping all of wp_posts did *not* fix it;

The eventual database record I landed on was a transient with the id of _transient_wp_core_block_css_files in the wp_options table

Delete that, and default css files should load again.

If you’d rather not touch your database, you might try one of these two other solutions until this is fixed in Core:

If you have access to CLI on your site, try running:

    wp transient delete wp_core_block_css_files

Activating the standalone Gutenberg plugin also seems to fix the issue. (Be sure to read the notices there before doing so, as the plugin will also give you early access to other block-editor features.)

Thank you, Kathryn. I decided to install Gutenberg and it quickly solved my problem.

Great, glad that did the trick!

Hopefully a fix for this issue will be in the upcoming WP 6.3.2 release; at that point you’ll be able to deactivate Gutenberg, if you want.
