Issues when updating WP, says it's updated but it's not

  • Ok, this is weird.
    Trying to update WP 3.9.1 to 4.01. Wp-admin asks for FTP credentials, I give it to him, then it goes through the update process smoothly:

    …
    Upgrading database…
    Wordpress updated successfully.
    Welcome to WordPress 4.0.1. You will be redirected to the About WordPress screen.

    But then surprise, it’s still WordPress 3.9.1 and it still asking for an update.
    Group and file owner is apache.
    Dir’s are 755, files are 644.

    I’ve put the FTP related constants in wp-config.php, but it’s the same story only without manual entry of the FTP credentials.
    Anyone had experience with this?

    Update.
    Since most of you will probably think that it’s a caching issue, short information:

    1. There are no caching plugins on the site
    2. Cleared browser cache and even tried to update from two different computers. Same result…
