Issues with Gallery in posts

When I insert a gallery into a post, it has the awkward nature of opening the thumbnail you click on into a new browser page which then has to be clicked on again in order to view the full-size image. Can the intermediate step be eliminated? I don’t see why you have to be taken to another page to view the same thumbnail instead of just seeing the full size image.
