Issues with upgrade to v. 3.2.1.
-
I initially installed this plugin just prior to the recent update to version 3.2.1. and all was working well. The feature I appreciated in particular, was the available option to show the popup only once per user. The recent update appears to have removed this option.
While I can appreciate the developer’s time and effort in introducing several other attractive new features, removing this option in the lite version is a negative for me which results in the lower rating. If this option were still available and based on my experience with the plugin thus far, it surely would have rated 5 stars.
Unfortunately, I am not a supported of spamming visitors to my website with popups as it detracts from the browsing experience and increases bounce rates. Rather the opposite of the desired effect which is to retain visitors and hopefully direct them to an engaging Call To Action that doesn’t beat them over the head with an annoying exit popup on every page visited. This is exactly what is now happening with the v.3.2.1. update. I expect to lose more visitors now and will seriously have to consider deactivating this plugin and searching for a new one or a free jquery script that allows me to present an exit popup only once per visitor.
As a marketer, I can understand the appeal to remove this function and offer it only with the purchase of a premium upgrade but as someone who used the previous Lite version that included this feature, it honestly feels more like a subtle form of extortion.
In a way, it’s like telling your customer “hey, we’re so pleased you enjoyed that feature but now we’re going to take that away from you. You can have it back but… it’s going to cost you $100.00. Sorry. It’s nothing personal, it’s just business”.
The question is: Is it good business practice or is this the kind of attitude that will drive potential customers away either to competitors (there are many other available options) or to seek similar solutions (scripts) readily available online free of charge?
I look forward to reading the comments of others and specifically the plugin developer.
Thank you in advance for your time and consideration.
