• Please could someone explain why iThemes backups are being created in a WP site I have, even though in the iThemes settings I have not selected to enable backups.

Recently my whole server was brought down and all sites on it brought down because the backups amounted to 30Gb so the server filled up.

I deleted them all a few days ago but they are back today. I am going to delete them again and will have to make the backup folder not writeable which means we can never use the backup.

Can backups be initiated via a URL and perhaps this is some sort of ddos by initiating all the backups to intentionally fill the server?

There’s 684 files created today and yesterday. As there is a zip and a sql for each backup, I assume 342 backups have been taken the past day.

Here is a selection of files:

I am also getting a few emails every minute saying the backups are attached (although they are not).

So I think they were actually enabled. I have disabled them. I thought they were disabled because if I went into the settings there was nothing to indicate it was enabled. The schedule setting was off for example. So I have no idea why it was doing it several times a minute.

The site has been REALLLY slow for days, and its so much faster now. i think ithemes backups must have jsut been constantly running for some reason and slowing it down.

You are not the only one having this crazy experience with iThemes….I just woke up AGAIN to backups run-amock.

I used Duplicator to duplicate the site on a different URL just a couple of days ago…. They both took off running creating bu’s every 4-5 minutes for the last 24hrs to a tune of 18gigs.

I have bu interval set at 7days, to keep one and to send by email only.

    I have a screencast for a developer.

I thought this said you posted it 1 day and an hour ago..not a week and a day ago….. Where it iThemes on this?

And here’s another crazy ass thing that has happened…. It was doing this..until I actually started looking at it. In my screencast you can see that the back-ups were still being made…that is until I deleted all the unneeded ones and looked at the settings. I didn’t change anything…It just stopped doing it.

Yes mine stopped doing it. First time it happened I deleted all backups and looked at settings. It didn’t happen again until several days later then just created 30Gb of files in no time at all and brought the server down again. I have disabled backups and also made the directory unwriteable so it cant create backups now.
