It’s not totally clear to me whether it’s possible to migrate changes I made on the staging site back to the live site.

In my understanding Import/Export only import/exports settings of WP Staging itself but no changes of plugins and the like.

So the staging site is just for testing but afterwards I still have to do what I tested on the live site, right?

Yes, exactely. Youc an use a tool like wp migrate db for copying db tables back from staging to live and you have to copy your file changes via FTP to the production site.

Since I tried a tool before that promised to sync back (WP StageCoach), I was not exactly sure.
This other tool creates a staging environment on a different server (managed by stagecoach) which is probably needed to make merging back possible. Of course this has the disadvantage of being not a correct clone.
