• I have been looking through the forum and have seen various threads that have already referred to the problem that I am having, but none of them seem to come up with a solution that I haven’t already tried. Subsequently, I’m still stuck..

Basically I want to type in Japanese on my site but I think WordPress is preventing it as all the characters are being displayed as (?). In WordPress itself, the characters are present when I type, but this is not being translated to the site. I have already ensured that UTF-8 is loaded and so I have no idea what else I need to do.

    Any ideas guys?

    Thanks

  • Hi,
I know you’ve posted this a while ago, but I just noticed it.

I don’t think your database character set and/or collation is set correctly.
Codex has a good article on how to convert them.

You might want to try UTF-8 converter plugin.

Make sure you backup everything before attempting any conversion/upgrades.

Japanese version of WordPress is also available. It includes a useful multibyte patch plugin.

I know nothing about database but I think I’ve found a solution.
Go to phpmyadmin (in your cpanel) and see your database. Then maybe you will find out that the collation for your database is ‘swedish… something‘. That’s why your WordPress front end won’t show Japanese characters.
And then change all the collation to “utf8_general_ci” or something like that. Don’t ask me how to do it, I just clicked around and find some button to change the collation of each files (or folders, not sure).
