I am wondering how to add more Jetpack options when using a theme created with Underscores? For instance, I would like to able to use the sharing and like buttons available with Jetpack under sharing and the comment like option under discussion but Underscores does not seem to be set up with much Jetpack support.

In WordPress I have Jetpack installed and I have the options selected in the settings for the sharing and like buttons toggled on but there seems to be no functionality built into Underscores starter theme and therefore the theme I created with it.

I did see in the themes inc folder a jetpack file with some options to enable infinite scroll etc but not quite what I am looking for. Any idea’s how I would do this? I can’t even find any documentation for Jetpack on how you would implement this in a theme you created from scratch..

The page I need help with: [log in to see the link]

The inc file should contain the resources you need, but if that’s not working for you we can likely help you track things down. You mentioned sharing and like buttons. Let us know what else and we’ll try to point you to dev docs for that.

Also, have you thought about using an updated starter theme? The _s theme was made in 2012, and while it’s had patches, it’s not getting new features. Here’s the latest:

Thank you supernovia. I will look at using components. I am just teaching myself and underscores seemed the simplest but now I see why. I will add what is in the inc file and see if that helps. Right now the main two things in the sharing button and like button for the posts.

These all hook into common functions at the end of the post. Perhaps Underscores, being a starter theme, doesn’t have these.

Are you sure you want to stick with Underscores? It was discontinued a number of years ago. As my colleague pointed out, there is a new actively developed started theme from the same developer: https://themeshaper.com/2016/02/09/introducing-components/

If you’re sticking with Underscores, the Answer under “How can I move where the sharing icons are displayed?” at https://jetpack.com/support/sharing/#customization may help.

Hi James, no I won’t be sticking with underscores in the future. I have downloaded and have been playing around a little with components and will switch for sure. In the meantime, though I will look at the section “How can I move where the sharing icons are displayed” in the meantime to see if for my current theme I can at least add theme until I have had a chance to look more at the updated starter theme.

    Sounds good. Cheers, @astoryaboutagirl.
