Jetpack Boost – ALL features turned on?

    QUERY

    1. Google PageSpeed Insights – indicates that there is unused CSS and Javascript.

I already have ALL options on Jetpack Boost selected. Should that not deal with the unused script automatically?

    1. Image Size Query.

When I look at each individual Post the Featured Image gets a green tick from Jetpack Image Guide Checker. However, images included further in the actual post are all showing a red dot saying files are too large.

Also, when I then look at Pages created with Categories the images all show a red dot saying files are too large.

Should the images not automatically load with the correct sizes?

I am using Tinypng Plugin to compress images during upload to WordPress Media folder. I have hit my free limit for this month, but certainly all my older images have been compressed.

    GeneratePress Theme version 3.3.1
    Layout/Blog – Archives/Posts/Pages – Featured Image all set to Below title, Centre, medium-large, 500 x 300

    WordPress
Featured Image size is set in WordPress – Settings – Media
    Thumbnail 150 x 150 (crop thumbnail)
    Medium 300 x 300
    Large 1200 x 1200

Any advice guys would be appreciated.

    3. Lastly, Desktop score dropped after latest update. All content still being created in the same way, no techincal changes at this end.

  • Hi there,

Thanks for all this detailed information. I know it’s been some time since you first posted; have you removed Jetpack Boost from your site since then? Our system indicates that it’s not installed on your website any longer.

We can troubleshoot this if you’d like to continue Jetpack Boost, but it will need to be re-activated first.

    Thank you!

Emily i have turned Jetpack off for the moment. I will try and look at this again next week.

Hi Emily, I re-activated Jetpack today but unfortunately, the same issues occur, so I have deactivated it again.

What further concerns me is the fact that Google PageSpeed Insight figures get worse once it is activated.

    Without Jetpack Boost:
    Mobile score 92, 100, 100, 100
    Desktop score 97, 100, 100, 100

After activation, this PageSpeed performance score drops to 89 mobile and 75 desktop – with a specific mention of the cumulative layout shift.

Obviously, I don’t want to leave Jetpack Bost activated if it is going to negatively impact the site, can we set something up so we can look at this in real-time?

    Hi @superbsalt

Thank you for your patience and for sharing that extra information.

Jetpack Boost can indeed affect your CLS, not that it’s modifying your site’s layout directly. This can happen indirectly due to how it injects or alters critical and deferred CSS and JavaScript.

But, the way your theme is designed and how any other plugins that add UI functionality are coded plays a larger role in affecting your site’s CLS score.

For a comprehensive approach to site speed, keep in mind that Jetpack Boost is just one factor. Your hosting, number and types of plugins, and so on also influence your website speed.
