Jetpack Comments, require social login, not allow guest posting

    Hi there,

    as the title says, i haven’t been able to find a way (or at least an answer) in how to make it such that while using jetpack comments, a person is required to login via a social login.

    if i turn on “users are required to be logged in to post”, the whole form on a post is removed and goes to “login to comment” and takes me to wordpress’s internal login.

    if i don’t have that, it works, but a user is able to simply fill in an email and name, without verifying it.

    I haven’t found any info on whether this is built to only be this way or not. the info on the jetpack website is unclear (as it refers to “guest” commenting but that term is not actually in the discussion settings).

    I’m afraid that won’t be possible. Jetpack uses the same discussion options that are available under Settings > Discussion in your dashboard:

    • Comment author must fill out name and e-mail
    • Users must be registered and logged in to comment

    It doesn’t offer any options to limit restrict commenting options to users logged in via one of the Social Media options.

    For whatever it’s worth, this would be a highly-desirable feature, if it’s something that you could build into Jetpack comments in the future.

    For example, on my site, if I allow guest comments, the place gets overrun by trolls. So, I have a registration requirement. But, man oh man, it would be awesome if folks also had the option instead to login via one of the social networks to comment. That way they get options, but I also avoid the problem of drive-by guest trolls.
