I’ve been running JetPack on a client site, https://tomasbyrne.com.

The plugin disappeared sometime in the last week (no changes made to the installation or other plugins installed/uninstalled that I’m aware of to provoke its disappearance).

I’m unable to reinstall, getting a message saying the plugin is already on the site and the installation failed.

Assuming I can go out and remove the folder but wanted to make sure there wouldn’t be any other steps that should be taken in order to do so safely and completely.

    Thanks for any assistance.

    Jetpack Mechanic ??

Could you try to log in to your site via FTP or CPanel, and delete the existing Jetpack plugin folder, and reinstall the plugin manually as explained here:
    https://codex.www.ads-software.com/Managing_Plugins#Manual_Plugin_Installation

You’ll find the Jetpack plugin folder here:

    wp-content
       plugins
         jetpack - DELETE THIS FOLDER

If you’re not sure how to do this, you can ask your hosting company for help. They should also have documentation explaining how to edit or remove files from your site using FTP or a File Manager in your admin panel.

Let me know how it goes.

This happened to me as well on two sites, and just like the original poster said, NO CHANGES were made to the site, but looking at the https://wordpress.com/stats/day/Marshwiggle.org page it showed the message “This site cannot be accessed.\n\nDisconnect Site.” at the top of the left hand column where the name of the Site being viewed is located.

When I looked at my plugins page (on both sites) I was greeted with a nonsensical message saying that the plugin was ‘missing’.

On both sites in a shell I rm’ed the directories entirely as seems to be a nearly bi-weekly problem with this plugin.

When trying to reinstall via the dashboard (multiple multiple times over the past couple of days), it will get to:

    Downloading install package from https://downloads.www.ads-software.com/plugin/jetpack.3.9.2.zip…

    Unpacking the package…

    Installing the plugin…

    and no further.

I post this as further information and confirmation that the OP is not alone in his/her woes. If the manual installation attempt fails I will post again, else, you may assume it was successful.

Yep. This is happening on all my WordPress self-hosted sites. Incredibly irritating! How did the coders manage to mess this up so comprehensively?

@captainblue This isn’t really related to the Jetpack plugin itself; it seems the plugin update process is failing on your sites. It may happen because your hosting plan doesn’t have enough resources to download and unzip the new version of the plugin. It could be because your don’t have enough free space left on your hosting plan to download new things, like a plugin zip file.

I’d consequently suggest that you try to install the plugin manually, as I suggested above, to rule out option 1 above.

If that doesn’t help, I’d recommend checking how much space you have left on your hosting plan, to rule out open 2.

    I hope this helps.

@jeremy Herve I can put paid to that as being the cause as I have > 250gb of storage and full r/w privileges for user/group. The very fact that I have a growing directory of disabled20160310/ directories each containing a jetpack/ directory and the fact that installing manually always works attests to space not being an issue.

You’ve got a legitimate issue here for self-hosted sites that is distributed across different situations. (I doubt I and the other posters who have asked about this topic here and elsewhere all use the same provider)

This also doesn’t address the fact that the unaltered files in the jetpack/ directory exist as they have preceding the error and despite remaining unchanged one day it will work and the next day it will say “The plugin is ‘missing'”.

Jetpack is mysteriously failing untouched by the admins.

    Cheers.

That’s indeed not the first time it comes up. Unfortunately, that’s not something we plugin authors control. The plugin update process is entirely managed by WordPress. The plugins files are stored here on www.ads-software.com, and the update process is the same for every plugin.

That said, Jetpack is a big plugin, and updates consequently require more resources than smaller plugins. Your server has to download a large zip file, unzip it, and move it around. Not every server can handle that, unfortunately.

If this happens across the board for all sites on your server, I’d recommend checking your server configuration, especially the max file upload size and memory limits. You can then check your logs and compare these values with the plugin update events.

    I hope this helps.

The automated update/install does indeed download the zip file and unpack it; the installation/activation is where it fails unless it’s all done manually.

I have unlimited storage in my hosting package so that’s really not an issue.

And why have you marked this now as being Resolved when it’s clearly so very far from being resolved?

This is only an issue with the latest release, by the looks of things (although I found similar threads from years ago with the same issues).

It might be worth trying to go through the same process with other large plugin folders, and see if you experience similar issues.

I would also recommend going through the process on a different server, if you have that option, to try to narrow things down a bit.

why have you marked this now as being Resolved when it’s clearly so very far from being resolved?

I’m afraid there isn’t much more I can do to help. Plugin authors don’t have any control over the plugin update process; that’s all managed by WordPress itself, as I mentioned earlier.

That indeed comes up from time to time, mostly for the reasons I mentioned earlier. It’s been happening less and less though, as we moved several language files out of the plugin and into www.ads-software.com language packs. Since the plugin folder is much smaller than it once was, errors happen less frequently.

Hi i’m getting installation error :

Plugin could not be activated because it triggered a fatal error.

Warning: require_once(/home/wwwthou1/public_html/wp-content/plugins/slimjetpack/class.jetpack-network.php): failed to open stream: No such file or directory in /home/wwwthou1/public_html/wp-content/plugins/jetpack/jetpack.php on line 72

Fatal error: require_once(): Failed opening required ‘/home/wwwthou1/public_html/wp-content/plugins/slimjetpack/class.jetpack-network.php’ (include_path=’.:/usr/lib/php:/usr/local/lib/php:/usr/local/php54/lib/php’) in /home/wwwthou1/public_html/wp-content/plugins/jetpack/jetpack.php on line 72

I also Installed manually but same error.

    Thanks for any assistance.

@keenimages It looks like you are using the slimjetpack plugin on your site. Since the plugin hasn’t been updated in the past 2 years, I would recommend against using it. Jetpack includes all the features available in slimjetpack, and more, so you can safely remove the plugin and install Jetpack instead.

    I hope this helps.
