My redesigned site is supposed to launch on Friday. Last Monday I lost access to the Dashboard. The guy helping me tracked it to a Jetpack conflict. He restored the site, but Jetpack will now not load. I get an XML error message that I do not understand.

Are you aware of any current conflicts between Jetpack and WordPress or between Jetpack and the Graphene theme? I need help soon please.

    Jetpack Mechanic ??

I’m sorry to hear you’ve run into issues.

    Jetpack will now not load

Does this mean that you can’t access the Jetpack Dashboard, under Jetpack > Dashboard?

Are you still able to access the old Module list page, under yoursite.com/wp-admin/admin.php?page=jetpack_modules?

I get an XML error message that I do not understand.

Could you tell me more about that error? Where does it appear? Could you copy it, and paste it here?

Could you also post your site URL here, so I can have a look?

If you want it to remain private, you can also contact us via this contact form:

I am told that xmlrpc.php is and always was blocked on my host server because of its susceptibility to attack. I find this odd as I am running a version of Jetpack on another site on that same server.

Here is the URL I am working with:
    soky.org/update

It’s a redesign of our site that I housed in a folder inside the main site.

    Here is the Error:

The requested URL was rejected. If you think this is an error, please contact the webmaster.

    Your support ID is: 16514556369532463770

Although if I type XMLRPC.php with the XML part in caps, I get a simplet 404 message.

    Here is the Error:

That’s definitely going to be an issue. Jetpack requires XML-RPC to communicate with WordPress.com and use the features that rely on the WordPress.com cloud. Unfortunately and as you mentioned, that file just isn’t available on your site.

As long as the file will be blocked, you won’t be able to use most of the features of Jetpack. If you’d like to use the features that do not require a connection to WordPress.com, you can enable Jetpack’s Development mode:
    https://jetpack.com/support/development-mode/

If however Jetpack works properly on another site of yours, hosted on the same server, it might be worth contacting your hosting provider again; they might be able to unblock XML-RPC for you on specific sites.

Which features require the cloud? At this point, I basically need the contact form and I can do without everything else. I’ve sort of had it with the entire process.

What I don’t understand is how it worked fine two Fridays ago and does not now.

Was there a major change to the plugin?

Right now, this WordPress site doesn’t do things my free personal blog does natively. I can’t see stats. I can’t import video from a simple YouTube link. For some reason, I can’t access this site from my WordPress.com account.

I’m not a web developer, which is why we are on this platform. I have used it before with success, but the last 10 days have been a nightmare.

Most of the features rely on the cloud, but the Contact form doesn’t. You could consequently use Development mode. Once you enable it, all features that rely on the cloud will be greyed out, so you’ll know right away what features you can activate and use, and what features can’t be used.

Your hosting provider might have some answers there. Jetpack has always relied on XML-RPC, but it could be that your host started blocking that file on your site a couple of weeks ago.

I can’t see stats. For some reason, I can’t access this site from my WordPress.com account.

Both of these features rely on constant communication with WordPress.com, so the options won’t be there as long as your site can’t communicate with WordPress.com.

I can’t import video from a simple YouTube link.

I’m not familiar with any import features, but WordPress itself allows you to embed YouTube videos when pasting them on a single line. You don’t need any plugin to do that. You can learn more about it here:
    https://codex.www.ads-software.com/Embeds

If that feature doesn’t work on your site, it would indicate issues with your WordPress installation. I would recommend running some tests with a fresh installation of WordPress on the same server, and see if you experience the same issues there. If you do, you’ll want to contact your hosting provider about it.

If I were to move the site to be hosted on the WordPress server does that solve these issues?

If you move your site to a server where XML-RPC isn’t blocked, it will indeed solve your issues.

So, I have followed the instructions to run Jetpack as a Developer as instructed on the Jetpack website and nothing seems to have changed.

I have also found numerous posts that indicate that a fair number of hosts block this xmlrpc code. How do people run this thing now?

I have followed the instructions to run Jetpack as a Developer as instructed on the Jetpack website and nothing seems to have changed.

Here is what you should see if you’ve enabled Development mode:

    1. The header of the Jetpack menu will mention that you’re in Dev mode: https://i.wpne.ws/hawU
    2. The modules that are not available in Development mode will mention it: https://i.wpne.ws/haxm

If you don’t see this, I’d recommend double checking that you’ve used the correct constant / filter name. Another alternative would be to use this plugin instead:
    https://www.ads-software.com/plugins/surbma-jetpack-development-mode/

Let me know how it goes.

a fair number of hosts block this xmlrpc code. How do people run this thing now?

The most popular hosting providers do not block XML-RPC, so most people are able to use services like Jetpack, IFTTT, or apps like the mobile WordPress apps. If your hosting provider blocks XML-RPC and doesn’t offer a way to unblock access to the file, I would recommend switching to a different hosting provider.

Jeremy, this isn’t my thread, but I’ve just spent three days going back-and-forth with my web hosts trying to get Jetpack to reconnect. I was getting a variety of errors: XML-RPC errors, secret mismatch, verification secrets not found, and generic http 500 notices elsewhere.

Here’s the problem: The latest version of W3 Total Cache (0.9.5). The update left me unable to reconnect to Jetpack, and also stopped the media uploader from working. There are lots of other problems mentioned on the W3TC support forum: https://www.ads-software.com/support/plugin/w3-total-cache

I didn’t even have W3TC activated on my site, but removing the plugin altogether fixed the issue. If you receive reports of people being unable to connect Jetpack to their sites, please check if they’re running W3TC 0.9.5. The solution is to either roll back to an earlier version or uninstall it altogether (or wait for an update that is bug-free).

I hope that helps. I’ve also turned off automatic plugin updating in my WordPress.com account. I’d like to have more manual control, to know what’s been updated and when, so if there’s a problem I can trace it more easily.
