I’ve got the latest Jetpack and have turned on the Publicize option. In Publicize, I have the wp.me option checked. I do not have the WP.me Shortlinks setting turned on within Jetpack.

If I also install the Official Bitly Plugin (so I can use my custom short domain) , I lose the tracking on the publicize buttons (# showing how many times each network has been used to share the post) as well as the sharing functionality itself (clicking the button opens a small window, which just re-loads my site w/in it instead of sharing to the appropriate network).

Anybody found a fix or workaround for this?

    Jetpack Mechanic ??

Instead of using the official Bitly plugin, could you try using this plugin instead:
    https://www.ads-software.com/plugins/wp-bitly/

Let me know how it goes.

P.S.: in the future, do not hesitate to post in the Jetpack support forums if you have questions about the plugin; this way I’m sure not to miss your post:

I would like to use WP Bitly but it doesn’t provide the functionality I want. I want all sharing links kicked out from my site to use my custom bitly domain. Adding WP Bitly to my site doesn’t provide this where the Official Bitly plugin does.

Perhaps WP Bitly will add my custom domain to posts going forward, but I would greatly prefer something that worked retroactively. Hence my ask for Jetpack to have the ability to use a custom domain in its Sharing/Publicize feature.

Actually nope, just played with WP Bitly on my site and it doesn’t do this either. So it doesn’t do what I’m looking for.

WP Bitly seems to work on my end, but I haven’t tested things with a custom domain.

I activated WP Bitly, entered my Bitly OAuth Token, and then published a post that was publicized to Facebook and Twitter. Here is how both updates looked like:
    https://i.wpne.ws/ZN4A
    https://i.wpne.ws/ZN4A

As you can see, it uses the Bitly link in both cases, while in the past it used WP.me. Here is a previous Facebook update for example:
    https://i.wpne.ws/ZMqH

I things don’t work with a custom domain, I’d suggest asking the plugin author for help, there might be a way to use a custom domain with their plugin:

I’ve contacted the authors of the plugin to which you’re steering me. However I’d think it perhaps a bit more valid for official companies to work together (Jetpack and Bitly) to get this behaving as users might expect.

Please update this ticket if anything is done in this regard to alleviate the dependency on plugins to make this happen and bake the functionality in to Jetpack itself, or if Bitly updates their official plugin to make it play nicer with Jetpack.

    Thanks.

Thanks. I subscribed to the topic to be notified of the author’s reply as well. Who knows, their plugin might already support custom domains; I’m not familiar enough with the plugin to tell you.

bake the functionality in to Jetpack itself

Jetpack uses WordPress’ core shortlink function to look for the URL to use on Social Networks, so it will use whatever is set on your site. It is then up to each URL shortener service to hook into WordPress’ core shortlink functionality thanks to filters like pre_get_shortlink.

Bitly updates their official plugin to make it play nicer with Jetpack.

I’m not sure that will happen, unfortunately, as the plugin wasn’t updated since September 2013, and Bitly doesn’t seem to plan any updates.

i’d be interested in knowing more about:

it will use whatever is set on your site

set where? can i do this outside of a plugin?

It is then up to each URL shortener service

does this imply there is some setup built in to Jetpack that contacts bitly? I would think this would be a prime candidate for custom domain handling of one’s bitly account if so…

can i do this outside of a plugin?

You can, yes. You can overwrite the default WordPress shortlink with the pre_get_shortlink filter. So you could use get_post_meta to get the custom short URL saved by the Official bitly plugin (it uses the bitly_url key as you can see here) and set that custom short URL as your new WordPress shortlinks. You can use this code as an example, but you will of course need to change the custom field key from time_bitly_url to bitly_url:

does this imply there is some setup built in to Jetpack that contacts bitly?

No, Jetpack only takes the value set in WordPress, it doesn’t contact any third-party url shortening service.
But third-party plugins can save a custom shortlink value in WordPress, as mentioned above, so you could use just about any custom url shortener with WordPress: services like goo.gl, or yourls, can work too.

good information. I might be able to come up with a solution given this.

    Jeremy,

How come when I turn on WP Bitly, then view a post and hit one of the sharing buttons, the URL shown in the share preview (eg to Twitter) isn’t the Bitly’d version?

    Jeremy Herve

    (@jeherve)

    Jetpack Mechanic ??

That will depend on the plugin you use for your sharing buttons.

Jetpack doesn’t use WordPress shortlinks for its sharing buttons anymore, since Twitter now has its own shortener (t.co). If you’d like to change that behaviour, you can install this plugin:

PERFECT. That is *exactly* what I wanted to have happen.

    Thank you very much!
