I run three different websites with WordPress and have always used Jetpack with them. The latest update of Jetpack has broken one of my sites – the site will not load unless I remove Jetpack from the files… It did the same to my other two sites, then I tried installing a previous version and it was fine.

Thanks jedipencil. When I see your private message, I’ll reply to it there, too. Keep me posted here as well, if you want.

So far, the problem (I’m guessing) is theme incompatibility. I changed the themes on two of my sites – one running an older Choco theme (which I liked for a simple blog), the other two both running Suffusion, which I love. On my scifi blog, I changed the Choco for Admired and then took the chance to update Jetpack to the latest version. All works well! And Admired is growing on me. However, for my “project” site, although I changed the theme, I’m still afraid to update Jetpack as I am very afraid I’ll have trouble and need to start over. On my main site, I have not changed the theme yet – I adore Suffusion and cannot find one I like enough to change to, AND it will take days to make the change if and when I do find something workable. That site is a portfolio site and is loaded with stuff.

I really miss the proper Jetpack for those two sites, because those are the two that can really use all the neat toys Jetpack offers. But that is where I’m up to with Adventures with WordPress. ??

    Hi Jedipencil,

We have a bit of a backlog with support requests at the moment. I suppose no-one’s gotten backto you via email yet? If someone did, do you have a ticket number you can share with me?

    Thread Starter jedipencil

    (@jedipencil)

No one has gotten back to me yet…

Two of my three sites still experience problems. Although all three are on the same provider (two are sub-sites of my main site), one is (so far) now problem-free. The other two (showcase.rabidhorse.com and rabidhorse.com) still get fatal error messages. Both run Jetpack 2.9 as they simply cannot take an upgrade, it all fails. The problem free site is now running Jetpack 2.9.2. (though when I upgraded, I still got the fatal error page. If I waited a minute or two before refreshing, it was fine. This didn’t work with the other two sites.)

Hi! I just saw the ticket you sent in (for reference it’s #1792675). At this point, without some kind of error logs, it’s going to be hard to troubleshoot this. Is GoDaddy totally unwilling to help with this?

    Thread Starter jedipencil

    (@jedipencil)

This is the message they sent me:

Thank you for contacting Professional Hosting Support. Our Plesk hosting servers does not support error logs. However, if you find that your websites resolves to errors, you can enable detailed errors which will provide assistance with debugging the cause if the issue.

By default, our Windows hosting accounts display a custom error when applications generate an exception. We display a generic error because the detailed error messages allow a malicious user to obtain sensitive information.

To troubleshoot the error, you can modify your web.config file and specify that a detailed error message displays. A detailed error message helps you to locate the specific code that is causing the issue.

CAUTION: The code samples we provide below do not constitute a complete web.config file. Do not replace your existing web.config file with the code we provide. Before changing your web.config file, we recommend creating a backup.

This stuff is out of my league. I know I’ll make a mess and I will not start over again, I’ve already done that enough times. One thing I will try on a weekend is to redo my site with a different theme, though these past weeks of experience is telling me there is no guarantee. I’m not even sure if it is really Jetpack that is causing this though it seems to be the one constant.

That’s unfortunate that it doesn’t come with logging. Although both WordPress and Jetpack work with Windows servers, it may worth asking them if they can move you to a Linux-based server, so that you can at least get proper error logs. Could you ask them if they can move your site to a Linux server for you? Doing so may even fix the issue you are having, for all we know. Ask them and let me know what they say.

    Thanks!

There are some plugins that just won’t update anymore, and on my MAIN site (rabidhorse.com), every plugin (ALL) that requests an update gives me this:

    Internal Server Error
The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request.

Please contact the server administrator to inform of the time the error occurred and of anything you might have done that may have caused the error.

More information about this error may be available in the server error log.

Usually, after 5 minutes, all is okay, but occasionally the plugin refuses to update or won’t activate. Example, the W3 Total Cache. I’d heard it was a good one to have, but it will not activate.

On one of my sub-sites (scififangirl.rabidhorse.com) all is good, at least so far. On my 3rd site (showcase.rabidhorse.com), it is glitchy, but works. ALL run the same theme now – I tried Admired (I miss Suffusion terribly), and it seems mostly workable.

I’m hoping ( and terrified) with the upcoming WP 3.9 update that things will fall into place. Either that or everything will explode…

I think you need to tell your host again, because that’s not a WordPress issue, it’s a server issue I suspect.

    (@jedipencil)

Well, since the WordPress update (3.8.2) everything is running smoothly on all my sites. After taking a really, really deep breath and updating, nothing glitched so I went ahead and updated Jetpack. So far (I stress “so far”), everything is peachy sweet and quick, not one single Fatal Error anywhere. So far. I had wanted to install W3cache – I have a lot of images on my main site – do you think it would safely install now? I couldn’t even install it before, never mind activate it.

I dunno, but the WP update may have helped… ?? I won’t mark this as resolved just yet, but if after a week or two nothing else happens, I’ll drop back in. Thank you for following this and the suggestions… ??

Now you’ve made me want to make a Peach Crisp.

    Hi!

https://showcase.rabidhorse.com/ is still using an older version of WordPress and Jetpack; you should update those right away.

I had wanted to install W3cache – I have a lot of images on my main site – do you think it would safely install now?

I’d say you should be able to; worse case, you delete it again! ?? Have you enabled the Photon Jetpack module in your sites? That can help with lots of images as well.

Glad to have helped, and I look forward to seeing the [resolved] in the title of this thread! ??

@jedipencil Hi! I’m not an Automattic Happiness Engineer, but I do happen to know quite a bit about GoDaddy hosting. ??

First, you will always have problems using their Windows Hosting. It’s not that it doesn’t work with WordPress, it’s that it works really, really badly. Their Linux hosting accounts are much better and will eliminate a lot of the weirder problems you’ll encounter. I highly recommend switching to those if you don’t have anything that absolutely depends on Windows hosting. You can use their systems to switch with no charge and minimal downtime, and without losing any data… Although, I would make a complete backup of your site’s files. Just in case. You never know.

Second, the internal server error messages and general white-screens-of-death that you’ll encounter on their Windows Hosting are symptomatic of low memory limits. Combined with their lack of error logging, there’s no obvious reason for this displayed. It doesn’t show the out-of-memory errors. You can remedy this by making a php.ini file in your root directory and putting memory_limit = 64M in it. GoDaddy hosting doesn’t seem to support other ways of adjusting memory limits, you have to use the php.ini file. They default to 32M, which is a bit low for WordPress and extra plugins. This would also explain why it’s working after an update for you, every version of WordPress tries to get a little better on memory usage, but it is not always successful.

Switching to Linux and increasing the memory limit may solve your problems for now, but in the long run, I would look into an alternative hosting service. GoDaddy hosting is cheap and sorta easy to setup, but it’s darned hard to actually use and it doesn’t scale well. Look into other providers like Dreamhost, Hostgator, A Small Orange, etc. Long term, of course, but I found that when I moved away from GoDaddy hosting, a whole lot of problems I had magically were fixed.

Hi Samuel… Thanks for the advice! I may well look into changing providers again, although I think I signed up for a 2 year thing, will have to check that. I’d just moved from Canadian Web Hosting, which I really liked, but it would have cost me a LOT more to have the amount of space I have now.

The wiphi.ini.pingie thingie… I don’t know how to get to a root file… I will look that up on the weekend or something, methinks it will take several hours for me to even remotely understand that… lol… But I do appreciate the advice. I will first check my GoDaddy options. Or lack thereof.

On the good side, things are running as they did before… for now…

Things are going pretty badly all of a sudden. My sidebars are all gone this morning, right when I’m apply for a new project. Not a happy camper at all… (www.rabidhorse.com) I don’t know what to do. GoDaddy is REALLY long about replying for any kind of help. If I try to change theme, most of the time I get an Internal Error message.

Edit: I looked in the one place I didn’t expect any changes to have happen and voila. ALL my widgets in the sidebars are gone. I did NOT remove them; there were all there yesterday. Today they are gone. Why?

For some reason all my sidebars were removed and put in the “unused sidebars” area of the Appearance – Widgets page. Easy enough to put them back, but I don’t understand why they were there in the first place. Then on both my sites (the third one, a spare-time thing – showcase.rabidhorse.com – I haven’t looked into because of lack of time on it, might get a new project, must concentrate on that first) I got notifications to upgrade to WordPress 3.9.

I had already updated to 3.9 on all three sites. I’m totally confused.

This morning everything was fine on the two sites, except for the TinyMCE plugin. There was an update for it, applied it, but it didn’t change anything.
