I run three different websites with WordPress and have always used Jetpack with them. The latest update of Jetpack has broken one of my sites – the site will not load unless I remove Jetpack from the files… It did the same to my other two sites, then I tried installing a previous version and it was fine.

    Hi Jedipencil,

Are things working ok for you now on all your sites? Just checking in on you. ??

By the way, you don’t have to add the link to this thread at the end of every post; that’s only necessary if you contact us via the contact for at https://jetpack.me/contact-support/ so that we can know where the original request originated. Thanks!

Hi Richard! Thank you for checking in. I had planned to post an update within a few days…

The issue is not at all yet resolved on my main site (rabidhorse.com), however, it so far seems to run fine on my sub-site (scififangirl.rabidhorse.com)

The only difference between the two right now are the themes. I’ve been experimenting to see if it would help. I returned to Suffusion for my scifi site, and (crosses fingers) it seems solid as a rock, the only bumps are when I update or install certain plugins. Only happened once in the past two weeks – the error screen came back and disappeared after five minutes. I don’t understand why that happens, and I have gotten no responses from GoDaddy.

On my rabidhorse.com site, the widgets still keep disappearing every once in a while, and that truly bothers me as I have potential clients that occasionally visit my site. I cannot afford for things to go wrong at the wrong moment. When I have a few hours, I will probably install Suffusion on that site – it seems more solid than the theme I currently have on my main site. Do you have any suggestions for simple, flexible, solid, portfolio themes?

I don’t understand the problems I’ve been having. I had WordPress for years before and none of this came up. Theme issues? Compatibility? I may change host services (again) later this year, but cannot afford it now. And which to choose? Everybody told me different before I went to GoDaddy, and I have to say that I don’t hate that provider.

Anyway, that is the deal so far… ??

Oh, by the way, the Gallery thing with Jetpack that you suggested works great. Love it! ??

    Hi!

To be honest, other Jetpack users have had issues with the Suffision theme, so I can’t whole-heartedly recommend it. It may be fine, but I’ve come across enough issues related to it that it might be a good idea to look for a backup theme in case it continues to cause trouble for you.

As for Portfolio-type themes, how about https://theme.wordpress.com/themes/fontfolio/ ? If you like it, you can use it on your site by downloading it at this link: https://public-api.wordpress.com/rest/v1/themes/download/fontfolio.zip

    Another simpler one: https://theme.wordpress.com/themes/motif/

Lastly as for hosting providers, Otto gave some good options. I’m with A Small Orange myself for some of ym sites and they are very responsive support-wise.

    Keep me posted! ??

Well I will avoid Suffusion then… Sad because I really liked that theme. I’ve downloaded your two suggestions and will try them out, probably on my fangirl site first, and see how they go. I also found one called iTheme2, is that a steady theme?

    Thanks again!

I must say that – now that I’ve thought about it – fewer errors were happening after the latest WordPress update. Don’t know if it really has an effect or not…

Well, I can’t recall hearing anything bad about it, so that’s a positive sign at least! ??

Let me know how things go!

All my widgets disappear now every time I make a post. It is very frustrating…! ?? I count on my website.

Would a purchased theme be more stable?

    (@richardmtl)

That is very weird, and I can’t tell you why that is happening, I could find any references to an issue like that in the past. Ideally, error logs from your host could help, but it might be worth starting a new thread for that here:

Will do. Will have an update as well. I’m still having the widgets disappear EVERY time I preview a theme, and occasionally when I post, but the other problems seem to have disappeared.

I’m trying ElegantThemes to see if that changes anything. I’m using my scififangirl.rabidhorse.com as a testing ground for it. There is a bit of a learning curve with ET, which is fine but takes a bit of time for me, but if all works well I’ll try it on my main site. I must say that so far it seems more stable that before, except for the disappearing widgets.

That’s an issue that occurred for folks using a beta of WordPress 3.9, but was fixed for the release. Are you sure that you still have this issue now? As for why it’s happening when you post, I honestly have no idea. Does that happen no matter what theme you use? Is it all widgets that disappear?

    Thread Starter jedipencil

    (@jedipencil)

Hmmm… Interesting. I got two notifications of a WordPress update when it rolled up to 3.9, which surprised me because I faithfully update whenever prompted to. The disappearing widgets began happening around that time. A week or so later (I don’t remember exactly how many days) there was another WP update for 3.9 which I also followed through on. Maybe that is a source of the issues I’ve got now?

Everything started with the Jetpack update… once that updated again, it seemed to be solved, and then the magical widgets thing began.

So far, on my scififangirl.rabidhorse.com site, I haven’t had one single white screen of doom appear since applying the Elegant Theme thing. The only problem, so far, are the disappearing widgets.

    Plugin Contributor Richard Archambault

    (@richardmtl)

Can you consistently reproduce the disappearing widgets? is it every widget? any particular ones? does it happen if you have 1, 2 or more widgets? I am really at a loss as to what could be causing this, to tell you the truth, and I doubt it’s a Jetpack issue, but I want to help point you in the right direction. Every bit of data can help with that! ??

    Thread Starter jedipencil

    (@jedipencil)

Yes, it will reproduce every time, consistently. If I preview a theme, every single widget that I have added will disappear, and only the original widgets that came with the theme will remain.

    Plugin Contributor Richard Archambault

    (@richardmtl)

Ok, WordPress 3.9.1 was released yesterday and should fix the disappearing widgets on theme preview. Can you confirm that? And do they still disappear when you publish a post, too?

    Thread Starter jedipencil

    (@jedipencil)

Woohoo! I saw the updates this morning and applied them to both sites.

I previewed a bunch of themes and so far so good! Everything stayed in place! The big test will be on my main site and I’ll do that tomorrow, it’ll be a big job.

If I may, I’d like to wait just a teensy bit before marking this as resolved. I swear, if everything goes fine for my other site, WordPress will have become completely indestructible. lol….
