    Hello,

As Jetpack has now become larger than WordPress itself (24.1MB for JP 3.5), it consistently times out because it takes more than 30 seconds to download and unpack (and possibly verifying the unpack) on some hosts like RackSpace Cloud Sites.

If possible at all, outputting some update would keep the connection alive, and the load-balancer would not time out. Unfortunately, it’s a managed service, so users have no control over this at all.

We can update by FTP of course, but we love the convenience of the 1-click update.

    Jetpack Mechanic ??

    Thanks for the feedback.

That’s indeed a problem, and it becomes a bigger issue with every release. Most of these 24.1MB are language files, and as more strings get translated, and new languages get added, the languages/ folder keeps getting bigger.

WordPress’ core developers are currently working on a language pack infrastructure, that would allow WordPress to download language files on demand based on your site’s language. They’ve already added that feature to core itself in 4.1, but it’s not available for plugins just yet. When that will be possible, that would allow plugin developers like us to remove all language files from the plugin folder.

We’ll post about it on our blog as soon as that’s possible.

Sorry not to be able to help you more for now.

Thank you. It’s not yet an emergency, but I fear that many would not update because of the inconvenience.

Anyway, another work around is to output as much text updates as possible through PHP to keep things from timing out. Anyway, I’m glad this is on your radar now.
