    Hi,

I have a problem with the full backup process.
Since two days, I receive a message: “AVERTISSEMENT : Job restarts due to inactivity for more than 5 minutes.” and the backup process blocks at “Export XML WordPress”.
I also received an error email from BackWPUp and I also see another error in red “ERROR: Allowed memory size of 805306368 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 20480 bytes)” and the operation terminates with errors.

Could you please tell me why I have these errors and how to correct them?

For your information, the backup process worked well before.

Thank you very much in advance for your help.

    Best regards

  • Hi @fotske, it looks like your site has likely gotten larger and requires more memory.

Are you on shared or VPS hosting? If shared, I’d ask your host if you can be permitted to use more memory. If a VPS, I would up the PHP memory limit, or if infeasible, then upgrade the VPS.

    Hi there,

I’m also receiving the same message: “WARNING: Job restarts due to inactivity for more than 5 minutes”. I’ve tried multiple times, multiple ways (email, folder, dropbox) and still get this notification around 67% “creates archive” and 79% “3: trying to create backup archive..”
I’ve had it running now 30 minutes and the backup is still not able to go through. Just to add: I received no error notifications.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hi Brandon @cocreation and thank you for your answer.
My site has not really gotten larger and it worked well before…
I am on shared hosting indeed.
What do you mean exactly by “more memory”?
Do you mean disk space or do you mean something like RAM or something else?

Thank you very much in advance for your help.

Hi @fotske, Brandon means that you need to increase PHP memory limit.
You can follow this guide to do that:
    https://docs.woocommerce.com/document/increasing-the-wordpress-memory-limit/
If you still getting errors, please contact your hosting provider and ask for increasing PHP memory limit and try again.
    Hope that helps,

    Hi @thisgirlabroad,

Please check your maximum script execution time setting. This is the most common reason for the warning you’re getting. It should be set to about 25 seconds.

    (@fotske)

Hi Brandon @cocreation, I have increased my PHP memory limit to the maximum (768 MB).
But I still have problems: “Job restarts due to inactivity for more than 5 minutes”.
When I go in BackWpUp then “Settings/Parameters” then “Operations”, the second option is “Maximum execution time” (I translate it from French): is this what you call “maximum script execution time setting”?
It was set at 30 seconds and now I set it to 25 seconds as you told to do to @thisgirlabroad but I still have the “Job restarts due to inactivity for more than 5 minutes”.
    What should I do exactly?
BackWPup worked well before and now it doesn’t work anymore.

Thank you very much in advance for your help

Hi @fotske, did anything change around the time that things stopped working? I would ask your host whether they have any restrictions on running background scripts. Let them know that you have a plugin that runs in the background and is getting killed off.

You can play around with the max execution time setting, maybe try 15 or 20 seconds, but likely you will have to ask your host about it.

Are you still getting the memory limit error as well, or is it just the warning now?

    (@fotske)

Hi Brandon @cocreation, I just get the warning now (AVERTISSEMENT : Job restarts due to inactivity for more than 5 minutes).
The full backup operation begins then it stops nearly immediately at 20% on the top progression bar (and it seems to be blocked on “Saving the files”) and 1% on the below progression bar (“1690 directories to save”).
I have no idea what changed around the time things stopped working, it’s quite recent but nothing special changed I think.
There was a new WordPress version I think, can it be due to that?
Is BackWPup compatible with PHP 7.0?
What else can cause the issue?

I have also asked to my host (Siteground) and they say that they do not have any restriction on running background scripts.
Do you have other recommendations that I can ask to my host to make sure everything is set up well?
But it’s strange because it worked well before…
BackWPup doesn’t work anymore since Monday.

What should I do to make it work again?

Thank you very much for your help.

    Hey @fotske,

Yes, BackWPup is perfectly compatible with PHP 7.
Okay there are a few options:

First, you could generate a debug log and post that, or send it to us. Set logging level to debug (not translated), at BackWPup > Settings > Logs. Rerun the job and send the resulting log.

Or secondly, and probably faster, create a user with the BackWPup Admin role, and email that to us at support [at] backwpup.com. Then we can investigate directly for you and try to find the culprit. We may possibly require FTP access too, depending on the complexity of the issue.

Or else, again you can play around with the max execution time setting to see if you get it to work.

    Hi,

I have exactly the same problem.
Before June 30, it was running fine.
And from June 30, it does not work anymore with multiple “Job restarts due to inactivity for more than 5 minutes” in the log files.
I tried to set max execution time to 25 but it did not solve the problem.

    Thanks for your help.

    (@fotske)

    Hey Brandon @cocreation,

I found where the problem was coming from.
When I don’t select “Export XML WordPress” in the tasks it does work again.
So there is a problem with the XML export file.
What is the use of this XML export file? Is it important in the full backup?
And how can I solve the problem with this XML export file blocking the backup operation?

    Thanks again for your help.

    Best regards

Hi @fotske, it was probably getting stuck somewhere in that process then—perhaps the process was taking too long.

Personally I just backup my files and the database. The XML export is just a WordPress export of all of your content. But if you have your database, it’s not really needed.

So, unfortunately, my problem is different.
It happens only when the usermeta table (almost 600 000 records) is included in the backup.
Do you have an idea of what can cause the problem ?

    Thanks

Hi @papoum, just replying to let you know I’m looking into this. It’s possible that the plugin just isn’t restarting at the right times.
