JSON Error – Cannot Update Page Text

    We have a client who cannot update information on their WordPress site: https://glaciallakeslive.com/

    They are trying to update text on their site, but every time they click the Update button, they are given the error: Updating failed. Error message: The response is not a valid JSON response.

    We logged into their account to test it for ourselves, but we cannot replicate the error. We are able to edit the pages and publish them with no errors.

    • We both are using Windows 10 machines and Chrome.
    • We had her try making changes in an incognito window, a different browser, and on a different computer. She is still experiencing the same error though.
    • The site is using Gutenberg
    • She recently updated to WordPress 5.3.2 – the issue started after that
    • The site is using PHP 5.6.27
    • The site is hosted with GoDaddy, and the account level they have won’t allow them to update their PHP past version 5.6.27

    The site is using PHP 5

    WordPress 5.2 and higher requires PHP version 5.6.20 or higher, and recommends PHP 7.3 or higher.

    I apologize, I had the PHP version wrong. The site is using PHP 5.6.27.

    Why would they not be able to update a page on the site, but we are able to make changes?

    Check to see what browser they are using, and if they have any extensions installed which seem, well, “off”.

    Specifically look for social media extensions as well. Anything having to do with “Pinterest” is often a problem.

    The basic thing you want to look for is anything that potentially modifies a webpage on every site they look at, more or less. The editor communicates to the site in the background, as it were, using normal HTTP type requests. If one browser can edit the thing just fine, but another is throwing invalid JSON errors, then my general thinking would be that that browser with the problem has something in it modifying the responses from the server in an unexpected and invalid way. Low quality social media extensions are the first thing that come to mind.

    We are still waiting on a response from the client regarding the browser extensions.

    She is using Chrome. We did have her test updating the website in an incognito window to see if it was the cache causing the error – she still received an error.

    We also had her test updating the website in a different browser – she used Firefox. She still received the error.

    She tested updating the site on 2 different computers – they both were on the same network. One computer is Windows 10 and the other is Windows 8. Both gave errors as well.

    She said she tested updating the website on her phone, using her data, and still received an error.

    We are having trouble fixing the issue for her, because we cannot recreate the situation on our end.

    The client did have 2 active extensions on her browser. She removed them and still received the JSON error.

    We ended up installing the WordPress Classic Editor plugin. She was able to update her website after that.

    2. Please do not jump into other topics and detract from their problem. If the troubleshooting already posted made no difference for you, then, as per the Forum Welcome, please post your own topic. A lot more people will see your post, and that way you stand a good chance of getting the assistance you want. Despite any similarity in symptoms, your issue is likely to be completely different because of possible differences in physical servers, accounts, hosts, plugins, theme, configurations, etc. Thus one problem, on one setup is not indicative of the functionality and reliability of an application as a whole.
