Jeff Chandler ran into this on WPMainline and did three blog posts about it. I recommend reading all of them, but at the end of chapter three he posts the solution that worked for him: https://wpmainline.com/2021/07/06/the-case-of-the-updating-failed-json-error-chapter-3/

Check all the ajax response and rest api response in network tab on developer tools. Also enable the debug and look for errors. Some errors might be returning with response due to that this kind of error might come on page.

    Thanks, Topher.

I noticed that when creating a new post or page, I also got a message that there was a backup copy that was different and did I want to see it? What??? I just started.

When I got out, there was a page called “Auto Draft.”

So there is something wrong with the auto save like Jeff Chandler found.

Toward the end of the long thread about this problem, one person mentioned that a tech at Namecheap was able to help. Fortunately, that is my host also. I submitted a ticket. While the first tech who answered didn’t know what I was talking, another tech did and solved it. This problem triggered Modsecurity rule. They white-listed my account and now I don’t have the problem.

Thanks, Vijay, but I don’t have a clue what you are suggesting.
