    Greetings:

I just left Wix for WordPress recently, where I had also purchased Google Apps under my domain name. When I transferred over to WP, my email address suddenly stopped receiving emails. After hours of research and phone calls, I found out that I had to access my site’s DNS settings, and point the servers or whatever. At this point I am confused, frustrated and discouraged with all of this. I just want my email address to work again. Can somebody help me? Lol. Where do I find these DNS settings? How do I get there? What do I do from there?

  • DNS settings are managed by either your domain registrar or your hosting company, so you’ll need to contact them to find out where to set up what you need. I’d try your registrar first as I beleive it’s always best to keep these things as far upstream as possible, but if they don’t allow those sort of settings (dome don’t), your hosting company will be able to help you out.

Not sure that your issue is even related to WordPress. But I use Google Apps, so I can try and help you.

The only reason your email would have stopped working is if your mail exchanger (MX records of your DNS) settings were changed away from Google, and why on earth would that happen just because you moved your blog (the A or CNAME record of your DNS)?

Anyway, it would help if you could post your domain so we can debug your issue.

and why on earth would that happen just because you moved your blog (the A record of your DNS)?

Most times people change the nameserver records, not just the A record, so that’s why everything changes. ?? Not everyone knows the technical details about DNS settings, so this is actually a very common problem that a lot of people have.

    True.

@fitnotesguy, to use my domain as an example, here’s what my MX records look like:

    hendriks.ca. 3600	IN	MX	5 ALT1.ASPMX.L.GOOGLE.COM.
    hendriks.ca. 3600	IN	MX	5 ALT2.ASPMX.L.GOOGLE.COM.
    hendriks.ca. 3600	IN	MX	10 ALT3.ASPMX.L.GOOGLE.COM.
    hendriks.ca. 3600	IN	MX	10 ALT4.ASPMX.L.GOOGLE.COM.
    hendriks.ca. 3600	IN	MX	1 ASPMX.L.GOOGLE.COM.

    and my SPF record:

    hendriks.ca. 3600	IN	TXT	"v=spf1 include:_spf.google.com ~all"

All under the control of almighty Google.

Alright, I will check out Godaddy.com, which is where my site is hosted, and see if I can find the cause of all this confusion. I have no idea why this happened as a result of me moving my blog, but the time at which I stopped receiving email, and my migration to WP lines up even to the same hour. It can’t be a coincidence. Besides, that is what everyone I have called so far keeps telling me.

    it’s not a coincidence.

When you changed the NS records to point your domain name to a new server, the settings on yoru old server are “fogtotten” because they can no longer by found.

That’s why it’s better to set these in the domain registrar instead of with your hosting company. If you’re with GoDaddy for the domain registration as well you should be able to get this set up in their system.

GoDaddy? Your solution is simple then, as they have a Google Apps wizard for configuring your DNS settings: https://integrate.godaddy.com/google/gmail-domain.aspx

Thank you for you very prompt, and quick responses. I was able to get my issues resolved thanks to your help. And I am a firm believer in the fact that GoDaddy.com has the best customer service that I have ever experienced from any company to date. They went to work and solved my issue for me (since I could not do it myself at the time).
