I have been testing WordPress on a “/blog” subdirectory for about 2 months and have decided to move WP to my root directory to power my site.

I carefully followed the instructions https://codex.www.ads-software.com/Giving_WordPress_Its_Own_Directory except I did not need to change the WordPress URL in step 3, since I wanted to keep the WP core files in the ‘/blog’ sub-directory.

Now all I get when I go to my root directory or mysite.com/index.php is an Apache “500 Internal Server Error”. Checking my error logs they show “Premature end of script headers”.

I think I’ve eliminated .htaccess problems, since temporarily renaming the file causes no change.

I’ve been able to return the site back to the /blog sub-directory by reversing the steps – but trying to move it to the root directory again causes errors.

I can still login to the admin panel, and have disabled all plug-ins and gone back to the default theme – still no luck.

    Any suggestions much appreciated.

  • before you move the blog to your root directory set the location of the blog to the root level in your admin area. then when you move it everything will be setup already.

Are referring to steps 4, 6 & 7 from the instructions in the link I gave? If so, I have already done those steps, plus the other steps. If not, maybe you can elaborate more? Thanks.

In troubleshooting I had come across this support page https://codex.www.ads-software.com/Finding_server_info and loaded a phpinfo.php file in my root directory. That file was also generating the same error as my WP index.php file, telling me that there was a general PHP problem in my root directory.

I contacted my webhost, and they fixed a permissions issue that was causing php files to fail.
