    Hi there,

After upgrading, get error 500 when viewing website and have the following in error_log:
[03-Jan-2017 16:54:44 UTC] PHP Fatal error: Can’t use function return value in write context in /home/easywpse/public_html/wp-content/plugins/stop-user-enumeration/stop-user-enumeration.php on line 118

Was working before update. Have disabled plugin for now.

    Regards

    Hi,

Can you give me a little more detail on versions
    1. version of wordpress
    2. version of php

If you have a development site I can access that has this problem, can I take look?

Meanwhile I will investigate with the info you have given.

1.3.6 released – should fix your issue – let me know, sorry for any inconvenience thanks.

On PHP 5.4 the issue still exists. On 5.6 + it works fine.

I just tried v1.3.6 and my site crashed – same error. WordPress v4.7 , PHP Version 5.4.45

OK, firstly 5.4 was end of life quite a while ago, but I will take a look. Amazing that host still run end of life PHP with unfixed vulnerabilities.

It definitely is an issue with PHP prior to 5.5

1.3.7 has been recoded to allow obsolete PHP 5.4 to work. Let me know if you see any issues.

I would say, as well as keeping plugins & wordpress up to date for security reasons, its a good idea to keep your operating system upto to at least supported revision. see https://php.net/supported-versions.php

Understood and thank you. Much appreciated. I’ve sent a note to the webhost.

No problem, and sorry for the inconvenience.

Re: PHP version, you’re definitely right, but that’s a whole ‘nother battle. *sigh* I’ve just about won it, but I’m not quite there yet in a couple of places. #manysites #manybosses #dontevengetmestarted #youdontwanttoknow

    ??

So thank you for the quick turnaround!

    You are welcome

I’m also having problems, if I activate this plugin the site is unavailable, saying:

Parse error: syntax error, unexpected ‘[‘ in /home/mysite/public_html/wp-content/plugins/stop-user-enumeration/stop-user-enumeration.php on line 104

Also running a PHP version older than 5.4. Disabled the plugin for the moment.

Latest version should work with out of date PHP now.
