This is an absolute “nit” of an issue, but perhaps it points to a possible coding fragility in the Kadence theme.

I installed the Kadence theme locally with the Yoga starter site. Only two plugins installed (Kadence blocks free and Kadence Starter Templates). I made 2 font changes in the customizer: (1) base font: from Lato to Karla and (2) heading font: from Josefin Sans to Rubik. Made similar font changes in buttons, other design elements with font settings.

The Yoga starter site runs perfectly fine. However, when I checked the performance (using the Chrome Performance Analyzer extension) it shows that Kadence is still loading the original Josefin Sans and Lato fonts. See below:

    https://fonts.googleapis.com/css?family=Karla:300,700,regular%7CRubik:700,600,500,regular,300%7CLato:regular%7CJosefin%20Sans:regular&subset=latin,latin&display=swap (25ms)

I have checked every line of text and heading on every page of the Yoga starter site using the whatfont Chrome extension — and all fonts displayed are either Rubik or Karla, as required. So there is no apparent usage of Josefin or Lato.

So my question is why is Kadence still loading these unused fonts?

By the way, I’m just getting familiar with the Kadence theme — and it is definitely merits a 5-star rating.

  • Kadence Theme and Kadence Blocks will load fonts together to prevent doubling up. My guess is that somewhere in the yoga template I’ve selected the font in one of the blocks and I need to undo that for future template users so that it’s easy to switch.

However, start by checking your site title and site tagline font selections. Those are in the customizer > header > logo section.

I’ll look through the template and see if I can figure it out if those settings are not the issue.

Thank you Ben for the fast response and suggestions. I’ll look some more through the Customizer font settings.

    Hey,
Did you manage to find the setting in your customizer for the site title and tagline?

    Hi Ben:

Thanks for checking back on this issue. I did a thorough check of every font setting in the Customizer (including site title & tagline) but did not find any errant Josefin or Lato font settings.

As a second check method, I changed every font setting in the Customizer that was “inherit” to Rubik. So every font setting in the template was explicitly set to either Karla or Rubik.

Unfortunately, the Chrome Performance Analyzer still shows Josefin & Lato being loaded.

My guess is that the Josefin & Lato fonts may still be specified in one or more of the Kadence blocks that are not used in the Yoga starter template.

With regards to the Kadence Blocks plugin, I did notice that the google fonts set is not the same as the google font set in the Kadence theme. (see https://www.ads-software.com/support/topic/accordion-block-public-sans-font-missing-from-block-font-options/). Might this provide a clue to the persistence of the two unused fonts?

    Hope that helps.

The different font options wouldn’t have anything to do with it, is it possible for you to post a link to your site, if I can see the source code then I can see your issue.

    Hi Ben:

Here’s the URL to my Kadence theme test website:

    https://wphobbyist.com/

Also, if there’s a way I can send you a secure message or email — I would be happy to provide you login credentials. That way you can see all of the Customizer and page settings.

One observation that I want to pass on to you is that — I noticed that the Customizer typography settings do not appear to be passed to the Kadence Block accordion. In the Yoga starter template, there are accordions on the Pricing and Contact pages. When I set fonts in the Customizer and in the Kadence Blocks defaults, they didn’t seem to propagate to the accordion block.

To change the “accordion pane title” font, I had to go to page -> block -> pane title font setting -> font-family, then select Rubik. Since the Inner Content tab doesn’t have a font setting, I clicked on each accordion text block and manually changed the font from Lato to Karla.

After making the font changes for the accordion, I used GTMetrix to generate the Waterfall Chart — so I could check the font loading. The chart shows Josefin & Lato still being loaded, see below:

    https://fonts.googleapis.com/css?family=Karla:regular,700%7CRubik:700,600,500,regular,300%7CLato:regular%7CJosefin%20Sans:regular&subset=latin,latin&display=swap

    Hope that helps.

    Hey,

I see, wasn’t catching it because they are set in the highlight settings.

The “Our Team” has Josefin set as the “highlight” font family.
    https://share.getcloudapp.com/L1uNKEDO

And the Wellness & Span have Lato set as the highlight font family

Those are definitely errors on my end. Those settings shouldn’t be set, just lefter over from the design process and missed when prepping the templates. I’ve updated the templates just now so that if you pull new from the cloud it would not install with those settings set.

Great — Glad you were able to resolve the issue.

I installed the new Yoga starter template, made my font changes Rubik & Karla, and then verified that the original Josefin & Lato no longer load.

Thank you so much for your help.
