I had needed to move https://www.eppinghorticultural.org.uk to another host, so I used UpdraftPlus to take a full backup from the old host, installed a fresh instance of WordPress on the new host, installed UpdraftPlus, and uploaded and restored my backup. So far so good, all seemed to work and the DNS was switched over.

I also decided to take the opportunity to move the site onto SSL – certificate installed, testing done, and apart from the odd minor glitch all was well.

So then it was time to take a backup. I tried three times: it took unusually long with nothing happening, and then failed with the message box as below:

    —————————————————————

…so then I decided to uninstall and delete UpdraftPlus and re-install. However, now I find I cannot install it either! – I get this message:

Installation failed: Destination folder already exists

I’d be really grateful if someone can tell me what is going on and how to navigate my way back to normality!

  • Hi,

It looks like updraftplus folder already exists in wp-content/plugins directory, Can you please rename the folder to updraftplus.old and then try to upload the plugin from WordPress admin > Plugins > Add new?

    Thanks,
    Harshad

Thanks, that got the plugin to install again, but it still won’t back up. The same essential message as before – any suggestions?

    Hi,

If you temporarily deactivate the other plugins on your site except UpdraftPlus. Do you still get the same problem?

    Hi Bryle,

I deactivated all plugins and it successfully backed up (although took almost 5 hours – I think I’m running short of space on my host package, so I deleted a load of unused images). I then started turning back on, but as soon as I added anything it seemed to fail. Then I noticed as I kept trying that I’d go to do another test, and despite the error message, the backup was still running. After turning all plugins back on, I still get this error popup, but the backup continues and seems to complete successfully. All a bit strange but at present at least I have a workable backup solution.

    Thanks!
    Roger

    Hi,

    Apologies for the delay.

Please could you send us a list of the other plugins that you reactivated and encountered the issue?

    Hi,

It looks like this is a fake plugin “Askimet”

Would you like to install legitimate Akismet Anti Spam plugin?
    https://www.ads-software.com/plugins/akismet/

If this is the case you can remove the plugin called Aksimet and install the above plugin instead,

Let us know if removing the Aksimet plugin, and installing https://www.ads-software.com/plugins/akismet/ helps to fix the issue?

    Thanks,
    Harshad

    Hi @rogbiz,

    Apologies for the delay.

It appears that your site may be encountering a memory limit error, but a security module is masking this with a 404 error.

Please could you ask your hosts to check the PHP error logs for any fatal errors?
These logs should show the original error that is being masked.

Thanks @dnutbourne, I’ll check this out and get back to you.
