• Some time ago, I reported on the bug in WP that sets up images as links to themselves as an apparent default for new users:

I still haven’t gotten that fixed, but more importantly, I wonder if there is a way, through some of the cleverness alluded to in that post, to strip the default for existing users?

I have explained the problem to my writers time and time again and they simply don’t understand it. Pisses me off, but some things you just have to throw in the towel on. So I need to go through posts every day getting rid of these useless hyperlinks.

Furthermore, I see this problem turning on on blogs everywhere as writers are clearly oblivious that they are doing it…

Any tricks out there to make it go away?

  • It looks to me like this is a default for the whole site, not just users that come in after the setting is changed.

Are you still seeing this happen even after the setting was changed? (It will not go back retroactively and clean up any posts where this has already happened).

Also, to speak to the usefulness…if someone was to upload a 1640×1768 image, they would obviously (hopefully) show a much smaller version (small, or medium) when publishing the post. But, if the reader wants to see what the BIG image looked like they would click the image to see the original. This is actually very useful for a heavily imaged website.

Yeah, I know it won’t change old posts (how could it?), but it still happens all the time with new ones, and there are so many people blogging now who refuse to lean HTML (should be illegal IMHO), that this problem CONSTANTLY appears.

Most definitely if you are using a giant image, like a chart, and have reason for people to magnify it, then this is useful.

But 99% of the time, this is just a nuisance for the reader who often accidentally clicks on it, plus it’s just unneeded crap code.

Anyone still noticing this? There’s got to be a fix to make it more difficult to make images into links. I am seeing this not only on my own site, but on hundreds of others. It’s a serious nuisance that novice bloggers don’t notice!
