Kinsta blocks the use of the WordPress Popular Posts plugin, likely based on how the plugin can hit the server really really hard.

However, because of caching and sampling, people are now able to configure the WordPress Popular Posts plugin so that it plays nice with the server.

I don’t think the folks at Kinsta know that.

I submitted a request that they review their policy, pointing them to https://github.com/cabrerahector/wordpress-popular-posts/wiki/7.-Performance

I would love it if the developer, Héctor Cabrera, got in touch with Kinsta to ensure them that the plugin can be configured so that it doesn’t crash sites.

    Thanks!

    Hi @tedslater, it’s been a while!

Thanks for the heads-up. It’s very unfortunate that Kinsta decided to ban WPP and while I’m not sure I can do something about it rest assured that I will at least try and reach out to them and see if we can sort things out.

If/when I hear back from them I’ll make sure to leave a comment here to keep you -and other Kinsta customers that may be reading this- posted.

Héctor, I just sent you a donation. It’s not much, but I just wanted to show you in a tangible way how much I appreciate you and your work. Your integrity and commitment to excellence as a developer is inspiring.

Thanks Ted, that’s very kind of you!

Well, since we’re here: I reached out to Kinsta the other day as promised and got a response back saying that they would be relaying my comments/suggestions to their engineering team to start a discussion about this. The representative also mentioned that this process might take a while as the engineering team is “usually really busy” but that they’ll try their best to get a timely response from them. Hopefully we’ll hear back sometime soon.

Hi Ted (and everyone else reading this),

    So here’s another update.

Kinsta just reached out to let me know that their engineering team reviewed my suggestions and included into their tasks queue adding modifications to their MU plugin and testing these changes in order to lift the ban on the plugin (which seems to hint that they’ll possibly go with one of the proposals I made.)

The not-so-good news is that their current schedule won’t let them get started on this until at least the beginning of 2021 so it seems we’ll still need to wait some more time.

    Thanks for the update!

We actually moved the site from Kinsta to WP Engine yesterday, since your plugin’s functionality is pretty key to the site’s “trending” sections. I made sure to let them know why we were going with WP Engine, rather than their services. ??

Oh, well I guess that’s a valid solution too hahaha.

Anyways, to anyone reading this: I’ll keep monitoring the situation and will leave a comment here as soon as I hear back from Kinsta. For the time being I’ll keep this topic’s status as not resolved.
