(peeks back into the room, and decides to sit cautiously by the door)
I am going to take another go at these themes for Kubrick, and try to see if i can’t add them as straight up 1.3 Themes.
Mog, there are a few details missing, but it looks ok. I am surprised actually. How much work did that take?
I’ll get on this on monday afternoon and see what i can do.
Perhaps applying these as straight up 1.3 Themes (with a huge thank you to Michael) will solve any semantics and/or swampiness.
    you never know…

dss if you know what the protocol is for a new theme could you share that with us or at least point us to it please?

For now, there’s no need for a template engine with my themes, just back up your index.php, wp-comments.php, and wp-layout.css and then overwite the files. If you don’t have a folder called “images” then you need to create one, and give it read and write permissions.
I’ll document and write up everything i discover about porting these to 1.3 as soon as i’m done, and then maybe we can talk more about what it all means.
for now, i would say the protocol is:
IF you are modifying someone else’s theme for distribution:
    1. ask permission
    2. take no for an answer
    3. credit the designer/code author.
I’ll know more when i’m done installing 1.3 and working on the template engine first hand.

Well, I did the famous 5 minute install. There is no Theme Manager plugin, it came with the 9/21 nightly. And, it’s simply a matter of customizing the files you want… index.php,single.php. All the current, as of 9/22 choices, are in the wp-blog-header.php in the template redirect section. Once you see how it is done and how the files are called, it all makes perfect sense. Then you can choose what ones you want in your site and have at it.

    Thanks mog.
@ dss. Any one who knows my output will know there is going to be no question of copying or even following any body elses ideas. By protocol I meant what does the theme need to be like so it can be dropped into the 1.3 switcher.
That is the mystery to all but the privileged few. ??

    heh..
clearly a mystery to me too…

Anything you want, be it an index.php with a stylesheet and images, or the new index with associated header, footer, and sidebar. You can add a single.php template if you want a different sidebar or no sidebar for individual posts like MT does. You can make it as simple or complex as you want. Even add a custom 404 page. I suggest installing 1.3 in a test blog and play around with it so you get the theme like you want before using it on your blog.
Only options lacking is links.php and stats.php. Now those would be awesome especially since the wp-stats plugin gets the links all wrong.

So when the switcher is adding your theme to its list what does it need to see? An index file? A bit of code? What ? I do not want to a lot of playing around. I just want someone to tell me how to port a theme to 1.3. That is all.

The bare minimum, guessing a stylesheet. If you have index.php in the template file, wp- blog-header will grab that instead of the default, ditto the other listed files in wp-blog-header. Helps to read the php files too if you are clueless.

dss, I should mention that I used the adaptation of Kubrick for 1.3 that was not done by Michael so there might not be a straight up conversion. The ports aren’t identical so any adaptation of yours to that port would not be identical. I am still playing around looking at all the php files in the port and in the latest build to see how it all fits together. I haven’t even tackled looking at Michael’s original. or porting my skins or trying something completely different myself.

Ah. That sounds like it. Even I can understand that. Thank you very much for that indeed. We are on the road now. The switch is made in wp-header and trickles down from there to an index if involved and thence the CSS. This sounds very cool. Thanks for your patience. ?? I am happy now.

Root, I knew once you saw what was going on you would be happy.

Well I am now I understand it. Even I am happy. Over the moon. This is going to be a lot of fun from here on in ??

a happy root is a functional website!
    very fine

Well even at alpha it is going to be nice for folks to try the new switcher without being forced into the choice of any one designer – even temporarily.
A lot of the design community are just itching to get started on 1.3 and they have just been waiting for the dust to settle.
