Language suddenly switched to another language

  • Hi,

    A few days ago, a client of mine reported that the language of WooCommerce had switched from Japanese to English.
    I confirmed that the dashboard and front-end languages are in English.

    No one made any changes to either WordPress or WooCommerce, and suddenly the language switched.
    Neither the theme nor any other plugins were changed.
    For the client’s convenience, both versions are still out of date, but had been working fine until then.

    The WooCommerce language files was installed correctly. I replaced it with the same version of the language files just to be sure, but the problem was not resolved.

    The WordPress site language was still Japanese. I tried to re-save the settings here too, just to be sure, but the problem did not resolve itself.
    The administrator user language was also still in Japanese, and saving over it had no effect.

    In the System Status of WooCommerce, “Language” is set to “ja”. However, it is not actually displayed in Japanese, but in English.

    How can I get it back to Japanese as it was before?

  • The same here, but only for mails.. mails now sent in English instead of German. But we are also using WPML.

    I don’t know if this is a Woocommerce problem or just because of the broken “translation” improvements in 6.7

    On more than 20 sites, language of woocommerce has changed to English.
    There are different woocommerce versions and wp.

    Apparently, translation updates and broken language files are to blame.

    Any idea on how to fix this error/bug?

    We are now also getting mails from our clients comlpaining about the same error.

    same here! It automatically changed from Romanian to English.

    For the moment, no idea on how to fix it.

    Only updating to the latest version helps. But this can break the entire site.

    Same here, on differente websites, woocommerce language automatically switched from italian to english.

    Downgrade to WordPress 6.6 solved the issue here.

    The same problem suddenly appeared also on two of my sites a few days ago: Woocommerce language automatically switched from Norwegian to English. But I solved it by updating to the latest WooCommerce, 9.4.2.

    WP 6.7 and Woo 9.2.3 (WP in Norwegian, WooCommerce always in english)

    I’m sorry to hear about the issue with your WooCommerce site language switching automatically from Japanese (JP) to English (EN). I understand how frustrating this can be.

    After reviewing your System Status Report, I noticed that your WooCommerce version is currently running on 7.8.2, which is quite outdated. This could potentially be contributing to the issue, as older versions may have unresolved bugs or compatibility issues.

    To address this, I recommend updating to the latest versions of both WooCommerce and WordPress. As noted by @bentjh , updating their WordPress to 6.7 and WooCommerce to 9.4.2 resolved a similar issue they were experiencing.

    Before updating, it’s always a good practice to:

    • Back up your site. Use your hosting provider’s backup tool or a plugin like UpdraftPlus to ensure your site is protected.
    • Test in a staging environment: If possible, create a staging site to test the updates. You can use the WP Staging plugin to create a staging environment. This allows you to confirm that everything works as expected without impacting your live site.

    Once you’ve updated, check if the issue persists. If it does, it might help to investigate any active plugins or customizations that could influence language settings.

    Hello @jonayedhosen ,

    I am aware that the version of WooCommerce is out of date.
    But in a previous post I wrote that it was for the convenience of the client.

    What I want to know is why this is happening all of a sudden and if there is a way to “get it back”.
    Is there any way to force WooCommerce to use a specific language, for example by using functions.php or wp-config.php or something similar?

    It may be possible to solve this problem by upgrading the version, but please understand that this is a risky and not immediately feasible situation.

    Would be great if someone could test if older version(s) of WooCommerce works correctly with WP 6.7.1.
