I’m creating a multisite to accommodate a large number of blogs, and I’m wondering if there are any limitations I need to worry about. My goal is for about 150 students to each have their own site.

I know that wordpress can handle a large number of users (because wordpress.com is run this way), but I’m wondering if there are any tips I should know about to keep things running smoothly.

The blog is hosted on a partition of our school’s server running WAMP. I don’t know the hardware specs, but we are already running a larger Ektron CMS on another server, so I imagine our hardware can handle it.

My hunch is that it should be okay, but if anyone has any advice please let me know.

    Thanks!

Caching would be a must, IMO. But if your server can handle the load, then you should be okay. ?? The limitations will be CPU and Memory. Get a hold of the specs, but you should be okay.

Thanks Ipstenu, I’ve installed caching and I’ll check with my IT department about the hardware. Thanks for the tip.

150 blogs will be no problem at all.

Edublogs.org currently have 898,551 blogs on a single MultiSite. They do use more than one database, but it is still all on a single installation.

For 150 blogs, you should be fine with a single db.

You don’t need to worry about scaling the db until you get over say 500 blogs.

WordPress.com is a single multisite with hundreds of servers as well as dbs. They have 23 million blogs.

Thank you, Andrea and Moonworks, for the reassurance. It’s my first time working with a multisite setup and I’m glad to see that wordpress scales so well.

    Thanks kindly!

You won’t even have to worry about it until you start outgrowing a VPS or dedicated host.
