Latest Update Crashed my site

I installed the latest plug-in update yesterday. It was the only change made to my site. Two hours later I could not access my site. I received a screen that said “database error”. The solution was to FTP into my site and remove the “last modified” plugin folder. That removed the error and the site returned to normal. Please advise! Thanks.
