I’ve tried to update to the latest version of Wordfence but I keep getting an error. I’ve never had this problem before.

The error message says: An error occurred while updating Wordfence Security: The update cannot be installed because we will be unable to copy some files. This is usually due to inconsistent file permissions. lib/.htaccess.old, models/.htaccess.old, tmp/.htaccess.old, views/.htaccess.old

I’ve not had to update any of these files before? I’m not sure I even know how to be honest and I’m reluctant to mess with core files on my blog.

Any assistance would be appreciated. Thx.

My Webhost ended up doing something to fix the problem when the same thing happened with Akismet. I’m not sure what they did though so I can’t be of any help to those who are experiencing the same issue. Sorry!

    Hi,

There shouldn’t be “.htaccess.old” files under these directories mentioned, and they seem to be created with another owner or insufficient permissions to get them deleted through the update process. Perhaps another plugin created those copies, I wonder if you have W3 Total Cache plugin installed?

Anyway, I’m pretty sure if you deleted these files the update will run just fine, you can do that by connecting to your website via sFTP or SSH.

    Thanks.

    Hi,

I don’t have W3 Total Cache installed. What does it do?

My Webhost has (somehow) fixed the issue for now.

    thx
