I started using wordpress and the chunk theme in 2013 and after initial hiccups have had no problems. Then, following a security scare I did what I should have done long ago – updated software, backed up my datebase, setup backups via VaultPress. All rather too rapidly and without documenting my changes!

Now suddenly, my main (only) menu has reverted to right-to-left and reverse order. I seem to remember when I started to use the Chunk theme I had to add some code somewhere to set it left and ordered left to right. Presumably this file has got corrupted or lost.

Could some kind soul tell me what to do ie what lines to add to which file.
    Thank you

I think I have found the answer myself. When I upgraded to wp 4.1.1., somehow or other my changes to wp-content>themes>chunk>style.css were lost. I have revered to a backed up copy and all seems well.

Glad you’re all set – glad you had a backup. You’ve just discovered very concretely why it’s always recommended to never edit the theme files directly, otherwise your changes will be overwritten whenever the theme is updated. ??

An easy way to add custom CSS is to install the Jetpack plugin and activate the Custom CSS module. You’ll then add your custom CSS in the new stylesheet editor that’ll appear in your dashboard, under Appearance > Edit CSS.

As alternatives, you could either install a standalone custom CSS plugin, or create a child theme.

How right you are! I did indeed edit the original Chunk theme – but then I see I later must have read up about child themes and created a chunk-child folder. Now I must ensure that these earlier changes go in this.

Thank you for the information about Jetpack plugin. This looks really good, I will look into it.

Great to know that people like you are following the forum and giving good advice – even though I had got myself out of the most recent mess. Much appreciated

My pleasure, happy to help! Good luck moving your changes into either a child theme or into a custom CSS area. Either method will ensure you won’t have this same problem again when you update the theme in the future. ??
