Layout problem

I cannot fugure out why my news listing is showing most of the news story, rather than just an introduction to each item – or even better just the title of the news story.
I have selected “up to 100 letters” but most of the news story appears and the news listing page just looks untidy.
I had cut down earlier news items to try and accommodate this problem, but that’s not practical going forward.
Is there a way to fix this, or is this just how the plugin works?
